Double Sided Flounders (mods any chance of making this sticky?)

After seeing Tony's mention of catching a double sided flounder I remembered that I still have a contact email for the lady (Margaret) at Newcastle Uni who was doing the research into these so pointed her to the thread. As she's not a member here she couldn't post but is interested in gathering numbers and info because the doublers seemed to pretty much vanish a while back.

Can we get a sticky thread on here for people to log their flounder catches this year clean and double sided so some kind of percentage can be worked out? I can point Margaret at the thread so she can keep an eye on it for updates.

It happens on and off mate, don't think they're fully sure what causes it ie whether it's something getting into the water affecting them or just an abnormality that does the rounds now and then. Go through years where there's loads of them and then years where you barely see any at all.

You tend to see variations from a few patches of the "dark" markings on the white belly, like blemishes. Then you get completely double-dark sided fish, sometimes with additional eyes, looks like 2 flatties glued together! I think double-white sided fish are far less common from what I've read.

Does denmark count? cant hurt to mention got one today, not a total doubler but it has a lot of dark on the white belly. it was thicker than a normal flounder. lots of muscles pic in gallery.

Tony, a few different people have been doing surveys over the last few years trying to find out why, where and how many mate.

another camo flatty from king eddys thats 2 in about 10 is there something special about that place (no pun intended ) or does this happen all over ???

Yeah it's Dove Marine/Newcastle Uni have been researching for years, was a few requests put out for any info about them but then it seemed to go quiet - i found some old mails and contacted the people to see if they were still interested, they were hence this thread was kindly put up.
