  • Blairmore - after a terrible summer!

The best summer since 1983 and my poor boy has been sick most of it. Full on man flu!

We had a day out on friend's boat on the the 29th of June and 7 days in Corfu, getting home on 12th July. That's when it all went pear shaped. Mark woke the next day with a horrible cold, probably from the aircraft's re-cycled air. Mind you I was fine. He had a pouring nose, blocked sinuses, headache, sore throat and a hacking cough. Being the loving partner I am, I headed home to make sure I didn't catch it! Just for a few days I thought. A week later he was no better so I came back to nurse him. Another week went by and I called the doctor who gave him a nasal spray, which was useless! After 5 more days I took him to the doctor and he finally gave him antibiotics. By this time we had cancelled our weekend in Whitley Bay and our annual trip to Tighnabruaich. On the day the tablets ran out he was feeling much better, but three days later back it came. I have never seen anything like it. Must be his age I suppose!

Anyway the upshot was, yesterday was the first time we have been on a Mackerel bash all summer. A beautiful day and no seal at the pier - with any luck it has died.

The anticipation was palpable, August the 11th and our first time of the whole summer on a fishing trip(the boat jaunt doesn't count as we weren't on the boat at the same time). High tide was 1230pm and we arrived at 1030am. Mark bought a box of ragworm and took some float rigs to see what was about other than Mackerel. There were some lovely Mullet cruising around the piles of the pier, looked a good size too, but totally uninterested in his bait! Not a touch on the bait rod all session, so he wasted £4.50 on the ragworm but he left it to a dad and son who turned up to fish later in the day. When we arrived we had the pier to ourselves, which was surprising given the lovely weather.

Nothing to shout about in the first hour so I had a wee browse through the church charity shop at the end of the pier. I bought a few nik naks much to Mark's chagrin and when I got back on the pier he had his first Mackerel of the day - in fact the year I think! smiley-lol.gif So I started spinning again and we were soon both into fish. Quite a few small ones, but a few decent ones too for the smoker. By the top of the tide we really had enough fish and decided to catch the 1315 bus and get off at Strone for a few pints. I do love the bus - no driving!

The poor old codger has had a rotten old summer. No boat fishing, no Tighnabruaich trip, still pasty white, as he hadn't been out for 4 weeks!

I felt so sorry for him I agreed to let him go to the Tyne with his pal David for a trip on JFK2 on the 30th of this month. I will unfortunately be back at work. So will he, but he is so determined to fish, he is ditching his students for a couple of days - very unprofessional - bet he catches nothing without his partner!

Anyhow back to yesterday, we had a lovely time at the pub and came home and sat in the back green with a bottle of wine and smoked some Mackerel - Lovely!

Hope to get out again soon
