  • Ardentinny

We went to Ardentinny on Thursday and checked in to our lovely caravan at the Glen Finnart Park. No facilities but very scenic and peaceful. We had brought fresh ragworm and our light spinning gear. We planned to fish early morning on Friday and Saturday and catch the 930am high tide. On Friday morning Mark slipped in the shower and put his back out! He was in terrible pain and totally immobile. I drove him to the hospital in Dunoon and they gave him painkillers and muscle relaxants. We did little on Friday as he just lay on the floor. I did go for a lovely walk through the forest though. Saturday morning came and I thought I might as well use the ragworm, left mark propped up at the window and headed to the rocks in the bay.

I don't really bait fish from the shore, but I gave it a go. Mark's rod I cast out with a 2 hook flapper form Rig n Bits. My rod I put on a jelly and did some spinning to see if there was any Mackerel - there wasn't. No action either on the other rod for about 45 mins, when the rod tip took a dive and I was in. It felt a decent fish so I was very disappointed to land a dogfish. Actually very difficult to unhook as the skin is so tough, but I managed it and back it went. Re-baited and cast out again while I went back to the jelly. I was quickly getting fed up casting for no return, so gave up the second rod and just relaxed and watched the baitrod.

Finally another bite and again it felt a decent fish. I was hoping it would not be another doggie and indeed it wasn't. It was a double shot of a small Saithe and a small Pollock.

Too small to keep but I was happy. I phoned Mark to crow! The poor boy sounded so depressed. I fished on for another hour and caught a few more small Pollock and Saithe and what I think was a Dab?

Feeling a bit guilty I packed up and went back to the van to cook my invalid some breakfast. By the afternoon Mark was able to get into the car and we drove over to Loch Eck and the Bowmore Gardens. We had a walk of about 300 yards before Mark could go no further, so I dumped him in the coffee shop and went for a stroll myself! Back to the van and as we had booked a table at the Ardentinny Hotel we got ready. I had to dress mark, well his shoes and socks at least as he couldn't bend down!

The Ardentinny hotel is beautiful. It lay empty of 12 years, but the new owner has obviously spend a huge amount of money refurbishing the place.

Lovely as long as you don't dwell on the fact that the hills on the opposite side of the loch have been hollowed out to store our Nuclear weapons for Trident Submarines. The white building is at Coulport. The meal was lovely and not absolutely stupid prices, that rural Scotland is famous for, just a bit daft, especially the drink!

Next day it was time to head home. Sadly we didn't get to do all the things we wanted to, but now we know the site is there, we can go again another weekend.

Mark had acupuncture this week but is still off work. With the previous week being the October school holiday he needs to get back tomorrow hopefully, but he still in a lot of pain.

We will go back soon hopefully. Just a 20 minute boat ride and a 30 minute drive and you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere.
