hi all:)
made some riggs up last nite and used size 4/0 o'shaunnessy hooks on them i will use the when im fishing off the groyne or in the same area because of the possibility of bigger fish there!:D
i normally use 1/0 to 2/0 hooks but i fish further up the river where the smaller fisheys are!
i was just wondering if ive went over the top with the 4/0's mind im sure craig was using 4/0s the other day at the groyne and the two codling he caught were big enough to swallow the down!:)
any thoughts:confused:

I use 4/0 to 5/0 for lower river have even used 6/0 sakuma manta and you will be suprised at how big a small codlings mouth really is. im fact i caught a dab on a 5/0 hook last night and it was smaller than my hand. normally for flatties i use smaller hooks. on beach i use bigger hooks as intend to catch bigger fish. always match the hook to size of baits you use and the fish you intend to catch.

I fish either 3/0 or 4/0 two hook pennel pulley rigs all year and often go up in size at Dunstanburgh cliffs.

I'm not interested in downsizing to catch smaller fish. I'd rather hit one good fish now and then than faff on fishing for smaller stuff.

I've had small flatties and even rockling take big bait on a 3/0 and 4/0 pennel.

To each his own though, and whatever works for you is just fine :)

aye mate spot on there!:)
like i said my norm is 1/0 and 2/0 for flatties and tiddlers round my neck of the woods but will use those when im getting further to the mouth or on the front itself!:)
iknow its supprising the mouth size on a codling! even the small ones have got a bigger mouth than wor lass!!:D:D:D:D

I tend to use 4/0's for any work on the tyne and as a general hook in summer off rock marks when there are more species around. I use 6/0's for any rock marks in the winter - mainly due to the fact that the water is more coloured and has more movement so the baits need to be bigger to kick out scent. I'll second what has been said, cod have bucket mouths and can take a 6/0 no problemm, even Tommies!

I generally anywhere from 2/0 to 4/0 Sakuma Manta Extra's in the winter months, and Larger 6/0 to 8/0 Kamadeen XX's off the rocks in winter.

As for now, my rigs consist of Sakuma Manta's and Mini Manta's between size 1 and 1/0, where as rock rigs have 4/0 to 6/0's on them for this time of year.

As another member said, in winter I also go rarely above 2/0 to 3/0 hooks too.

Well RL83 m8t that size of hook is alright where the big fish are but myself i use 1/0 to 2/0 on the river or pier fishing but at the same time flatties just suck the bait in so that would be no bother with that size hook where they are okay:D:D:D

A codling will easily take 4/0's i've even had small dabs & flounder on them while targeting codlings on the beach, i use mustard vikings rather than o'shaunnessy as they have some give in them and will straighten when ur snagged up and you can bend them back afterwards, one of the best allround hooks you can get

thanks for all the info guys its much apreciated:):)
will stick with me 1/0 2/0 riggs at mo but will defo use the 4/0 riggs when fishing the groyne and beyond! gotta vary and experiment you know:):D:D
i agree with using mustad vikings but aint got any at mo so pulled the o'shaunessy's out of a draw the other day be a shame not use them there a really nice looking hook(cant belive i just said that:D)
thanks again guys:cool:

Match the size of your hook to the bait you will be using, its no good having a single lugworm on a huge hook, similarly its no good having a huge bait on a tiny hook.
The hooks i use depend upon the time of year, venue and bait being used. Your idea is right though, a cods gob is huge and a 4/0 would go all the way down no problem.

aye mate mite moth ball them till winter when the cod come enforce:) mite have a better chance then:D
but mite use the odd one from time to time in conjunction with my second rod with normal 1/0-2/0 hook riggs:D
cheers for you thoughts and info mate!:D

I caught a rockling about 6 inches long on saturday morning that had attacked a big mussel and lug bait on a 4/0 Sakuma

Little begger snaffled most of the bait and swallowed the 4/0 a good way down :(

Managed to get it unhooked and released ok though :)

Notice how I cunningly disguise the hook with weed...

Here is a prime example that hook size doesn't count this was in norway on a 2 hook pulley rigged with half a bluey using 2 8/0 sakuma manta extras
