Eyemouth

Aye aye lads, thinking about an Eyemouth trip in a few weeks in an attempt to end my 6month series of blanks.

Was just wondering if it needed any specific conditions to produce fish up there.
E.g. does there have to have been a blow?
Does it have to be a big tide?
Will daylight produce fish?
Also, is there any mark that I can fish all the way up to HW (it's a long way and want to make the most of it).

Any info, greatfully received. Me gear's going on the loft (or ebay) if I don't start catching!

Iv had some very mixed results from there always fish a rock mark underneath caravan park (just recently found out its called hairy ness) it's a mark usually you can get onto 2 hours before low water but WONT get off on high unless you can leap like a gazelle!
So you'll have to get off before your stuck & move elsewhere or sit it out
Iv always caught in daylight it's very deep water take light gear for float fishing for pollock, it's a very mixed bottom with weedy/rocky areas surrounded by sandy stretches.
Make sure you get some big launce for floating for the pollock.
But....... There's plenty of fish around still Iv done very well on the Howick marks lately, if I get the day off on Sunday that's where I'm heading 2hours either side of low

Good luck wherever you decide & stick at it

me and lucky chris head across the golf course, turn right at the turnstyle, follow the narrow path til you can go no further.
look down, and act like a mountain goat, canny climb, wouldn't try it on me own, and deffo not when it's wet.
anyway, when you get down the fishing's really good, as tony said, mixed ground with plenty weed, Pollock coalie and kelpie's. lad's have had wrasse, but not me, yet.
good luck.

Excellent advice as above.
I would add for the caravan park a long cast recommended if using bait. The water is very deep as stated, you might see boats just a few hundred yards off the rocks. I say long cast because one year we could get nothing from the shore but the boats where reeling them in non stop and was very frustrating watching!
( Back when I couldnt cast properly ;) )

as davy says park at the golf cause follow path but turn left at the turnstyle you will see loads of marks all the way down to the harbour all deep water easy to get to and loads of cod, coalys, pollock and wrasse, best times are june to sept on a warm sunnyday flat calm crab, lug, rag, mussel for the cod and sandeel and lures for the Pollock,if you turn right you have to be a mountain goat to get to the marks and fully fit but big bags and well worth it if you are up for it. davy.

I had very boring sessions up there until I spoke to a load of scuba divers.
They gave me a rough but interesting idea of what the bottom was like.
They reckoned a fairly rocky area full of weed & hiding places & large shoals of sandeels in these areas obviously seeking cover from big fish which were also spotted,
These areas were within 50 yards of rock edges, I changed my tactics & done short lobs usually resulting in fish, never had much success though casting distance

Alright Dreadlock. 6 months with no fish is a bit rough mate, well done for sticking at it I say!

Regarding Eyemouth is there is not much happening just now as far as I know in terms of cod. I say as far as I know, I haven't fished it since end feb as it seemed like there were no fish around. Was fishing quite well up until end of Jan then seemed to dry up. Have spoken to more experienced fishermen than myself and apparently this is not uncommon for this part of the world. I would leave it for up here if it is cod you are after until the crabs start to peel. Although yesterday I really fancied a shot to see what was about but didn't venture out in the end

The area fishes best in winter after or during a good swell in my experience and the conditions and your confidence/ physical ability regards the terrain will dictate which marks you can access and fish safely. There has been mention of hairy ness but in a big winter swell I would definitely not recommend being on that mark. If you do come up this way there are many marks around the golf course and caravan area that are safer.

It seems a lot of the advice you have been given here is more geared towards summer fishing. My understanding is that Pollack from the shore generally start around May at the earliest and certainly no kelpies around this time of year (last one I caught was end of Nov).

My advice mate is not to drive past Craster area to fish Eyemouth. From reports read recently it seems to be fishing well. Although I did venture down that way a week or so ago for 5 hours without a knock but that's fishing!

If you do head up this way you can check the sea state with Coldinghams Surf Webcam.

Have you given any thought to (with 6 months of no fish) it could be the tactics you may be employing rather than location you are fishing that may be letting you down? There are loads of marks down Newcastle/ Sunderland/ Ryhope way that have been fishing well over the winter.

If all else fails and you are ready to chuck it go do some flatty bashing to lift your spirits :)

most of the fish caught at eyemuth are in daylight at 6the moment a lot of coalys to frozen crab ,you will get Pollock from easter onwards as long as it s flat calm you can fish most of the marks over h/w and don't forget a lot of the cod are at your feet to short lobs. davy.

Stick it out locally until may(ish) then head up there target fishing for pollock wrasse etc ill guarantee you'll enjoy it

As a couple of 50 somethings we gave the scary rock marks a miss when we stayed at the caravan park!

At the back of the park go through the wooden gate, turn left for about fifty yards. A easy scramble down takes you to a large flat rock accessible at all states of the tide. We had cod, mackerel and a saithe there.

We later in the week tried Coldingham Beach and had some decent flatties and a scorpian fish.

No outrageous climbs at all.

If you fancy a charter Oceanic is good.

Thank you all very much for the replies and advice. I'm not planning the adventure for a few weeks but you have all given me a lot to think about in the meantime.

that slab kayos mentions is my favourite mark, cracking wrasse, cod, coalies, flatties, I've even had a flippin sole from that shot:D

Not the best photo but is this the spot g.ordon + kayos?

Red Rocks. Nice spot, easy to get to.

Just in from 4 hours at Eyemouth Wrasse-ta, not so much as a knock. I would leave it for up this way for a couple months. I will be

No not where we were mate. Could be the point at the opposite side of the bay though. Where we were the rock was really flat, about 30'x15' really pleasant and comfortable and only about a 70' scramble down. The only rock mark we dared to try. The rest looked way past our aged climbing abilities!

It would look very different with the sea on, to me it sounds like the mark you described getting down to and the one I'm on about, cliff to the right of the pic and there's a huge rock in the middle of the pic which would be about ten yards to your right when fishing the flat rock, pretty sure this is the one yer fished in comfort mate:D with a flat sea like:D

You are probably right Gordon. It was a beautiful sunny day, flat calm sea. The slab was only a few feet higher than the water when the tide was high. It was 4 years ago and at my age that is a lifetime! :red:

I remember it was deep water with only a 50 yard cast and we didn't lose a rig! I thought I still had photos, but I must have binned them off my computer. I remember it was lovely and we went there the day we arrived. Need to go back for a long weekend and take in a charter on Oceanic too!

yep, the fish are right beneath yer feet on that mark, 30yd flip with peeler does the bizzie. don't walk away from the rod though as if one of them lunker wrasse gets on and you don't react quickly yer doomed :D:D

Yup, will have to work out how to make float rigs Gordon. No idea how to tie a slip knot? Looked it up on Google but ended up with a knot that wouldn't pass through the rings! :(

Made Lynn laugh though! :red:
