  • HELP need re:- rev counter

Well i`ve been looking for a rev counter for the boat ??
the engine is a Ford 4D and i think the max revs are 2700rpm and it should run efficiently at about 2100-2200 ish so instead of sending all that diesel up in smoke for no extra speed i think its about time we had one !
The only problem is how to and Who`s got one for sale etc
I was told you can run it off your alternator if you got the right one(think we have ) then its just a wire to your dial from there and then one to earth ??????
First is that right ? then second whos got one i can buy beg or steal or borrow any advice would be greatly appreciated to a novice deisel mechanic.......

    Hiya

Yup that is correct, there is a long screw on the back of the alternator that you use as the pick up for the Rev Counter. As for the counter itself, I got mine from the local car accessory shop. I just told them what engine it was for and they done the rest. I\'m using the Ford 1.8XLD engines, the same as the one in the escorts & mondeo\'s. You could also botch up a rev counter from the dash display from the same car., tis not great but it works

If i\'m right the Ford 4D is an industrial engine which is used in forklifts and argicultural machinery around the 100hp mark. Your best bet might be to try Loyds at Throckley (an agricultural dealer to do with all things Ford) there stould be a fitter there you could speek to and they would be able to get in a new one (price might be a bit much).

lots of VDO units on ebay which \'should\' work, but might have a plan B for you. There\'s a garage in the village here, and the guy has a thing about tractors, there\'s dozens of em he breaks and uses for spare parts, and mostly ford/fordson majors. Now I think the 4D is the same lump as a fordson major tractor engine, my brother has one on his boat, and if so the rev counter should work. I\'ll go down this afternoon and see if I can\'t liberate one from his greasy mits

ok, just to confuse you even more... it could be one of 2 types of tacho depending on the engine.
unless its an ancient lump, when its more likely to be electrical rather than cable

Apparently there\'s 2 versions of 4D engine, and depending on the age it might be a cable driven counter, rather than and electrically driven one - according to my tractor man anyway

he\'s having a hunt around to see what he can dig out, but could be a choice of sizes as well, and scales

                  keep you posted

Bert , I\'ve got a hand held tachometer which you could clock the engine revs with (Travelling ) and just mark the throttle to suit . Your welcome to borrow it ( Keith will know what I mean ) . I\'m up tomorrow if you need it give us a shout .
