  • Ling on the wrecks

Oli and I took the day off yesterday and found that the fog forecast for Amble was incorrect, which gave us greater options. Light winds and a flat sea state gave further possibilities.Heading out to sea, we found the water inshore still very murky after the previous couple of days' blow, so after catching some mackerel off Coquet we headed out to some wrecks.

Drifts were initially fast, at 1.4 knots, but this was the peak of the tide and for the rest of the morning the drift speed would subside greatly. By the time we were on the second wreck, it had dropped to 0.8 knots, and by the third it was almost at a standstill.

It was pretty much ling from the off, intersperesed with a few codling of between 2 and 4lb, and the occasional pout. Fortunately, most of the ling went back down again, either because we popped their swim bladders, or else because we had brought them to the surface slowly. There's no teling if they ultimately survive, but some research suggests most do.

Eventually though, we'd had enough ling to go round, and just fishing for more in the hope of bigger specimens would have been inhumane, so we headed back inshore to fish the rough ground, but with little result. The water was stilll too murky, so we headed for home.
