  • Bank Holiday Monday

After refueling at the marina, Oli and I went up to Craster. It was a slog as the seas were very lumpy, and the swells much bigger than the forecast 0.6m. The winds soon abated however, and the seas flattened. Unfortunately, while there were dozens of codling, few were bigger than 1lb, so after a couple of hours of landing nothing but mini codling, pout, coalies, pollack and a few mackerel, we thought about going out to the wrecks. However, apart from clouds of coalies both uptide and down tide, there were very few decent fish present. By now, it was early afternoon, so we opted to go up to Beadnall. It was a good choice. My first drop with a 25g metal lure that Oli tells me is used primarily for seatrout claimed a huge kelpie that we estimated to be close to 10lb. Oli has the photo on his camera, so I'll try to upload it later, since the attached photos were all from my phone. We had a very busy couple of hours with numerous kelpies, many between 4 and 8lb, as well as a string of pollack to 6lb. And absolutely masses of mackerel. All this in 20-40 feet of water. It was manic, and great fun. And the run back to Amble was far more comfortable than the trip out.
