  • Line for salmon.

I've booked four days in ireland next week on a shark hunt, but if the sea gets rough we have a plan B...Salmon fishing.

Never done it before so any advice on spinning gear would be welcome. I have a few Greys salmon spinning rods which should be ideal. I would have thought my carp Shimano aero's would be fine with this. They are currently loaded with 8lb and 15lb braid.

Any advice on recommended line strengths/type would be appreciated.

    Braid or Nylon?

Thanks in advance and watch in boat reports if we do actually get out and go for the sharks. If notwe will have tobuy a very expensive licence and go for the salmon/seatrout.

    Cheers

Never done salmon fishing but seen a few lads on the river at Durham. They don,t seem to have out flash-just normal spinning stuff with the twirling lures.
Lads also fish at a few spots on my patch at Ch-Le-St. Again i don,t think they use out flash. Some float fish with prawns for bait?.
I would say the gear you have now would be ideal.

15lb braid would be OK. I use 20lb braid with a swivel on the end and a 2ft length of 15lb mono between that and the spinner.

        Thanks mick and Kevin.

I will get some 15lb braid to be on the safe side. I have not used my shimano's for about 3 years so a change of braid would not do any harm and with cost of the days fishing its a negligable cost. 50 euro's for a license and 35 euros per rod per beat so a tenner for a spool of line is not out of order.

Its actually cheaper for a days shark fishing for blues and porbeagles than a days salmon angling.

The rods I have are from greys and were built well before they became known for carp tackle. They used a salmon spinning blank to build a carp rod for export to Germany and named it the Edge Carp. They were a custom order but unfortunatly the die on the blank stained the greys label a bright pink colour. The customer refused the shipment and they were stuck with them . I bought the lot for the right price and most of them i have sold on over the years.

They have handled barbel to 12lb on big rivers like the severn and hampshire avon and carp to 22lb in still waters. I dont have any doubts about their ability to handle big fish but was not sure what line to use. I have never been salmon fishing but have caught them on the Avon on of all things luncheon meat and at Birtley on lobworm.

I actually am hoping not to go for salmon as this will mean the boat trip has been called off. We have booked three days on tuesday weds and thurs but if things get rough its going to be salmon fishing.

I am now wondering if I will meet the correct dress code. I understand it has to barbour jacket and hunter boots...hope they find my DOT approved HI Viz waterproofs and steel toed wellies acceptable.

        Cheers
