  • Braid, Fluro or Mono

    Hi Lads,

Been reading this forum for the last couple of weeks and Ive decided to give LRFing a go.

I have a rod in mind (from Moonfleet) and Ive baught a packet of white Isomes and a grubs.

I have a tiny Jarvis Walker Zenith reel that I 'nick' off my son.

I also have a couple of packets of 6+8 hooks from my carp fishing days.

My only query is the line.

Do I use braid, fluor or mono. And if braid what is PE braid?

    Thanks in advance,

    Lee

hi m8 Poly-Ethylene based filament lines. These lines are much stronger than classic mono-filament nylon, and now many anglers use them. It floats because it has 0.97 weight ratio, when water has 1.0 weight ratio. The line is braided with a lot of very thin fibers and it tend to have coating to protect the thin fibers..you need to use florocarbon tie about 6-12 inch on end of braid as this is invisible in water

Braid for me, strong, finer diamater and no stretch = duirect contact with lure for setting hooks.

This is for fresh water fishing though, Braid and rocks do not mix as it isn't as abrasive resistent as mono.

            Hi guys,

            Im a bit confused.

thought braid sunk and mono floated.

What would advise as a general set up, ie 0.5 PE and a 2' 4lb fluro leader?

            Cheers,

            Lee

                Hi Paul

Ohh my head hurts thinking of what to get.

Does floro have a lower diameter to mono?

                Cheers,

                Lee

its knot about the diamater m8...its all to do with the fish knot seeing your line and flourocarbon is invisible to fish.and also its their as a shockleader as if you get snagged up you have more chance of snapping the flourocarbon than ya braid.

                          Right lads,

Ive just received some YGK G Soul X3 0.5 PE braid and some YGK Gesox leader.

My question is how do I know how much backing to put on my reel in order to get the 100M of braid to sit correctly?

                          Cheers,

                          Lee

Easy if you have a spare spool, put braid on, fill to desired level with backing. Then take spool off and wind back on spare spool job done.

I tend to under fill my spools, i find you get less wind knots.
