  • Firdt kayak trip tomorrow morning (sunday)

Well I'm all kitted out and ready for my first trip out on my kayak, I've resisted the temptation to take any bait with me. Taking my lrf gear as well as my normal lure kit. Hopefully the swell stays down so i can launch from the beach, otherwise I'll be limited to between the piers. Fingers crossed I'll have something to report tomorrow, oh and i wont end up in the drink

Well i got out, sort of. The dilemmas started last night when i put the kayak on the car and found my fishfinder mount was hitting the car roof, (note to self get a kayak rack for the car) got a plank of wood out of the shed, problem sorted. The next issue was the kids, between the two of them getting up and what not i managed to get about 2 hours sleep, still i was up so i might as well be fishing. Headed out about 7:00 and decided i would give it a go. I had some concerns about the wind but, as an ex surfer the swell didn't worry me.... Untill i came to launch lol. Still i cracked on and paddled my way through the small swell. It quickly became apparent that i was not as confident as i had been in my youth. After a quick paddle a round i had rediscovered my sea legs and decided to get my rod set up. After a couple of casts i realised i had drifted almost the length of shields beach, (note to self get an anchor sorted for next time) i paddled back along the beach, against the wind and the tide this sapped my energy very quickly, (note to self, have some breakfast and sleep before you go out next time). Decided to call it a day after only an hour in the water and pointed my kayak towards the shore as paddling against the wind was going to be alot harder than walking along the beach. Now all i had to do was not capsize in the surf on my way in, the swell had picked up a bit and worse of all the beach was full of dog walkers. Managed to catch a wave in and land with little drama. Had a long walk back down the beach to the car but it wasn't all bad, i had manage to launch and land safely and more importantly i was warm and dry. I didn't get much fishing in but i enjoyed it anyway and i learnt alot in a short time. So a few things to sort for next time and hopefully i might manage to do some fishing lol

                      Well done for trying Phil.

Get a drogue (basically its an underwater parachute), we used to use one on the reservoir boats when I used to flyfish, really slows the drift down. On a small rowing boat it was fine but thinking about it, with a kayak, there may be stability issues that would need checking out first.

well glad you got to wet your yak
can be a fast drift sometimes a drogue will slow it down as long as the wind is against the tide
might see you out there sometime jeff

Yeah I've got a drogue but didn't think it would help as the tide would of been pulling north as well. I should have stuck to my original plan and went between the piers. I'll be better prepared next time and hopefully the conditions will be better. I think i may have been just a bit too keen to get out lol
