Fathom 15 rough ground

Hi lads. Does anybody use a fathom 15 for rough ground with 30lb straight through. Usually use saltist, dragg on fathom higher than saltist so thinking of trying the fathom.
Any opinions would be appreciated.

Think the saltist is the best bet like mate but I have a fathom and I do think it would cope. I would just incorporate some for of rotten bottom system. Maybe use 25lb line with leader still though. I'm not sure on what the fathom would hold using 30lb. It's a canny winch the fathom like so it would cope, I love mine.

Cheers Sean. I always use a leader even with 30lb. I should have said. I bought 2 fathoms second hand last week but have not had time to use them.

Like sean say's it would cope with the ruff but I think the prob lies with capacity,I use a bg30 with 35lb straight thru, don't know how much 30lb,if it's thick ish diam it would hold:question:sturdy reels mind, just if they hold enuff line.Would be ideal with 20lb/.40mm n a leader but that might be too thin 4 yah's,all depends on how ruff the venue is:cool:

You buy the 2 off Phil? Good deal on then 2 reels I was at the shop when he bought brand new lol. Excellent reels the fathoms like only problem I had was the brakes engaging themselves during cast

I couldn't get away with using my 15 for rough ground, so i bought the 25 for the rough stuff 45lb line short 60yrd casts into the kelp perfect, no retieing shock leader every other cast, now the 15 only come out of my box when i get a mad rush of blood and think oh ill go and fish the pier, as on the beach ill stick my fathom 12 on,

Not sure of the lads name, lived down horden. Think tbe line capacity may be a problem as you's have suggested. Spool alot smaller than s saltist. Cheers lads.

Why would the line capacity be a problem.i have 4 all with .40mm line about 20 lb on and if ya fill level or just above top gold ring on spool then that gives ya roughly 230 or more yards. Now say you up that to .50 mm line say old style 30 lb then it should give ya 180 ish yards or there abouts. How far are you lads actually casting into your rough ground.

Had a bit play tonight with 30lb mono. More than enough line if chucking of skeers. No good of cliffs, like i often do. I think fathom will be fine for most rough ground. Ive usrd a 525 before without problem. Fathom spool is supposed to be same size.
Cheers lads.

Good advice that stephie 1;) when you look at it that way, your right,a lot depends on the diam tho like u say, mine on my bg is .62mm like tow rope:Ddepends what you want/ground you are fishing over.
