Whitley Bay Pipe

Just been walking the dog down near Whitley Bay pipe. There was a lad on the end fishing with the tide coming in fast. Kept watching as I knew he was leaving it tight. Next thing I saw him jumping in as either his box or rod had been washed in by the waves. Waited to make sure he got back on ok - then he did it again - think it was his rod rest 2nd time. 3 times he jumped in. He did get back on then nearly lost his box again. He eventually walked back along on his way in minus his rod rest. A fair few have been killed at the pipe by waves washing them off into the kelp. Can't believe anyone would be daft enough to jump n 3 times regardless of what he'd lost.

I had a look down the other week and decided to give it a miss ( small waves coming over only about 6 inches but you never know if a bigger one will develope and in you go

perhaps instead of watching you could have had a word and pointed out the danger he was in?

what and probly get a mouthful off um ,if he cant see the danger hes in why should the lad put himsel in danger himself.
ideot should have got off earlier or at least after the 1st soaking.


Lifeboat rescue for Redcar kayak pair

two men had a lucky escape off the coast of Redcar after their kayaks began drifting out to sea.

Lifeboat crews in the town launched into action following an SOS call from one of the men’s mobile phones.

Dave Cocks, from Redcar RNLI, said the two kayakers got into difficulty when one snapped a paddle, and the second man attempted to come to his rescue.

He said: “They were close to East Scar, the rocks just off Redcar, when one snapped a paddle and couldn’t steer the kayak.

“His friend went to assist and the two began drifting into small breaking seas.

“There were no injuries. All we had to do was pick the two kayaks up and drop them on the beach.”

The lifeboat crew had the pair, believed to be in their 20s or 30s and from Redcar, back on dry land within 11 minutes of taking the SOS call at 11.49am on Saturday.




Mr Cocks said: “They were within sight of the lifeboat station. From launching to arriving on scene took about two minutes and we were back on shore within 11 minutes. It was a fairly straightforward job.”

He added it was always a good idea for anyone venturing out to sea to take some means of communication with them, but recommended a marine VHF radio is better than a mobile phone.

He said: “That allows the coastguard to direct the lifeboat and, if people weren’t certain of their location, they would at least have something to raise the alarm.”

The incident was the second dealt with by Humber Coastguard in just a few days, as people took advantage of the summer sunshine over the bank holiday weekend.

Considering by the time he decided to jump in I was up at road level and - as I said I had my dog with me. The tide was half covering the pipe so he would never have heard me.
I watched to make sure he got back on ok. I'm not putting my own life on the line for someone who is stupid enough to disrespect the sea!!

I pointed him out to the missus as I was driving along the coast. Told her he was leaving it really late to be getting off, thought "he either knows the mark really well or he's a nugget!" Obviously the latter. And if he'd picked last night when there was a canny swell on he could have ended up a casualty.
And you can't have a word with someone when your half a mile and a cliff top away from the mark!

Got washed off the back of the pipe about 1975. Was fishing alone and it was about 2am on a January morning. Fortunately I was fishing near the bend and not on the sandbags. A freak wave came out of nowhere and lifted me right off. It does put the frightners on you !!
