Parky and myself began fishing at 1730(ish) and after stocking up on Lug worm, mussel and mackerel we headed down to South Shields walkway for a couple of warm up casts, but soon packed up as the emptying tide was ripping through the river and made it near impossible for our leads to hold bottom.
So made our way onto the pier, where we stayed for a good couple of hours with only a couple of knocks and catches to show for it, despite having tried a couple of different spots to try and find where the fish were hiding. Parky did however manage to bring in a lobster which at least keep HIS enthusiasm ticking over.
After many a cast and very little in the way of bites we decided that we would head back under the river and try our luck on Whitley Bay beach as the tide would shortly be on the turn and we felt this would be our best opportunity to catch. First few shots when we got there were from the rocks just left of Rendezvous cafe but still no luck.
So as the tide began to creep towards us we shifted off the rocks and walked a little way to the south. Parky had told me on previous occasion that the first couple hours of the flooding tide were the times he had caught his big fish, and he was right! A short time later after watching his rod tip go mental he reeled in a Three Bearded Rockling weighing 1lb 3oz! a personal best for that particular species!
He was not the only one to catch a new personal best though, as i began to tighten my line i remarked how much slack I had out after just tightening it up earlier, Parky informed me this was known as a "drop back" and there was a good chance I had a fish on, and once again his instincts were dead on! After gaining a personal best Cod from my previous session, I couldn't believe my eyes another monster (3lb 7oz) emerged from the surf. He was caught on Lug and Mackerel with a size 4 hook.
Needless to say I was jumping at having broke my PB for a second time in a row! Overall the whole day was pretty slow moving right up until the finish, with more than once occasion when we both felt like calling it, however we kept plugging away and both ended up catching something which made it worth while, and as i was told once;
"Id rather have a bad day's fishing, than a good day's work"
Tight Lines folks.
(apologies for the crappy photos, my camera sucks balls!)
