Kirkcudbright, doggy bash!

It's still a bit early to catch loads of different species from the Dumfries and Galloway coastline, however in early April you can normally guarantee a good session, catching dogfish.

We chose the Borgue area of Kirkcudbright, which on a beautiful day like we had on Saturday, is a very pretty and peaceful area to fish from.

Borgue, village.

Here fishing is from deep water rock marks that at the height of summer can give up all sorts of species.

We had fish from the off, doggies as expected, with some off us getting quite a few. At this point I must say all fish went back where they belong, there's nothing worse than the sight of a bagfull of dead doggies.

Gary and his first ever doggy.

We picked a cracking looking spot with very rough ground out to about 80 yds, that gave way to cleaner ground at distance.

Among the dogs we also managed to catch whiting, dab, small codling, a bullhead for Gary and a canny sun tan to.

So after a great day out in a lovely area, I think we all just about had enough of doggy bashing for this entire year!

After the quiet spell we've had on our coastline, it's nice to blow away the cobwebs with a good few fish.

can you eat dog fish ? Im sure when I was a kid working on N Shields fish quay they were called rock fish , or something like that,Im sure the flesh was red & white in a sort of rasberry ripple ice cream sort of look.and it tasted great, or Im I thinking of spur dog ,I know they had all sorts of ``posh `` names for some of the fish that was sold,, rock turbut. Im sure that was cat fish, dead cheap it was almost thrown away , not nowadays, does anyone know the old names for fish, used to work for Hadaways in North Shields when I was 12-15 thats about 30 odd years ago, dead busy shop never stopped , boxes and boxes of fish,to be gutted fillited ect, the quay was as busy as hell even on a quiet day, hundred of guys working, not like now , last time I was down there ther was only a few dozen boxes of fish,

Dogfish goes by the name "Rock Salmon" in many chippies, particularly popular down London way. Years ago remember the Chinese were keen to get as many as possible from boat lads to be turned into "scampi"!

Gary :)

Yeah you can eat them
We went up summer 2010 and had a small fire going on the pebble beach at drummore and cooked a doggy over the hot embers with the skin on when it was cooked the skin peeled away from the meat . Lovely fish to look at but to taste is a very strong fishy flavour.
