Well anyone that had been following my post about the never ending winds will have noticed I was very unsure about going to sea today with met office, MSW and BBC news all saying wind from the SE over night and a Mod sea occasionally slight, this made it one of them days when you cant get to the pier ends quick enough so you can see for yourself.
With leave booked in and Graham and my cous Dave as crew we set off on Stingrays earliest trip ever, a 4.30am start as I had felt we had a 5-6 hour window from 5am until around lunch time.
We headed up the river with he sun still not up and the harbour was looking promising
We got out and met with a lazy SE swell but nothing we could not take. I decided not to go for the numbers today and try for a few better fish so rough ground was off the menu and off we went to some 5 mile wrecks.
The sea got better and better as we got further off and the sun popped out to say hi...ooow did I mention you could leave a news paper open on the deck and it would not move.....yes no wind
Graham fishing the first drift and look at that sea
We plugged away taken a few cod, coalie and mackerel but nothing over 5lb so we set out further off.
By this time it was t-shirt weather and it was a fantastic day, I hit next wreck after a 50mins mins steam aka the banker and second good call of the day.....I hit into my biggest Pollack of the year around the 5lb mark (returned)
Then me, graham and Dave all started plugging away taken ling 3-6lb a drift before Dave hooked into something abit bigger, his first double figure fish on his 5th boat trip, a hard fighting ling of 11lb
This was followed by the odd cod and odd ling to 5lb then I hooked into the twins on consecutive drops with both hitting just on double figure ling
By this time it was getting on and the early start was telling, we set off for home and hit one wreck on the way back....only Graham managed to get a fish from it but it was the best cod of the day, a cracking conditioned 8lb cod on a pirk
So that was that, a day I never expected to get past the rough ground turned into a 32mile round trip but boy it was worth it as not so much for the fishing thou a good haul of cod, ling,Pollack, coalie, herring, mackerel, whiting and pouting kept us unhooking all day but for the SMOOTH wind free sea today..bliss
So for only the second time this month we never had to do the below
EXTREME FISHING
