Abu 6500 Sports Mag Problem

Alrite lads, wot line do u all use on your Abu 6500's? I have gone for 20lb line to cope with the slightly rougher stuff (got a slosh 20 with 25lb for the rocks) but have found that when i get a good cast off theres not much line left on the reel, and im not a great caster tbh ive got lesssons coming up soon and im worried im not going to have enough line on the reel, anyone else had this problem? I know i could drop to 15lb line obviously but worry that its not strong enough for the pier etc..

What line you using? it may just be very thick, so not much to fill the spool. Other thing is are you under filling the spool?

Alot of torny casters use 6500's and smaller, yeah with lighter line but the thickness is only 0.05mm difference so not too much really for you to be emptying your spool.

Using 20lb red ice on this reel, loaded close to the spool lip with just enough space for my leader which i always have long incase i need to handball a fish up the pier

red ice is fairly thick in my opinion, but still should be thin enough for a good amount on your spool...

is it down to the metal of the spool after your cast or see the metal atleast? i know the pier make your line higher after the cast so you have more line out just because of the height (pythagorus' right angle triangle) also you add a little distance because you are elivated too and it is deep water. So might just be a combination of everything, or your just worrying about it being far down, or your getting much further then you think and you've got a hell of a chuck with rig and bait

To be honest I wouldn't be using an Abu 6500 on the pier incase you do get a decent fish on i only ever use them on clean beaches.id go for a Abu 7000 ct or even better a 7500 ct get loads of 20lb line on and strong as anything plus there not bad casting reels that's if you want to stick with Abu's if not buy yourself a slosh 30 again get loads of line on and also pretty decent casters.

i have used a 6500 for years now i have caught good fish on them all you have to do is make sure your shock leader will reach the water for lifting

Thanks lads, i do use my slosh 20 on the pier mostly but was just the fact about not having much line left on the reel after a good cast with the sports mag, its not down to the spool but not far off, and was panicing about using it at my casting lessons and after if and when i get better, think i might step down to 18lb F1 as ive got a spool of that in my box and pick up another reel for the 20lb line?

I use 18lb F1, to 18lb/70lb Ultima tapered leader, on a high speed mag, loads of capacity, if you can bottom that you don't need casting lessons The tapered leaders are long( think 37' ?), and are probably long enough for most piers.

According to the specs you should get 200 m of 20lb red ice as it is 0.40 mm. If you switched to Sakuma Crystal at 0.37 mm for 20 lb you would go up to 231 m.

If you are emptying the reel on the pier the guys at South Shields better duck ;¬)

Try the 18lb Daiwa tournament, good quality line.
