..........Truth. Whats the most horrible thing u did to an eel after it wrecked your rig and covered you in slime?

I have seen Cockneys make friends with and agree to eat these a creatures but think that we dont share theior passion

Much as I dislike them (on a par with hagfish to my mind), the only thing I\'ve done with the eels I\'ve had the misfortune to hook, is the same as Rory.........unhook them and return them back to the water.

cant stand the orrible things   , but have been told by more than one angler that a good eel cut into chunks and fried with skin on is nice as pie, well not as nice as a hot stokers steak and kidney pie ;) but nice all the same so iv\'e been told :exclam:

cheers

does anyone know how to quickly dispatch an eel. i ask because i often keep them for pike baits and have trouble killing them humanely. it seems it doesn\'t matter how hard you hit them with a priest they\'re still alive. i do my best then chop them into 5\" sections, wrap in cling film and pop in the freezer but you can bet when you go in the freezer next day at least half the sections have squirmed out of the cling film even the sections without the head.

I\'ve seen tools which hold the eel down and humanely put a blade through its head with no risk of cutting yourself. A piccy below:

Micky you been reading the Grand kids the Lamton Worm Story - sounds familiar LOL :D

best way of despatching an eel is to cut itbehind the head and through the cartiledge , or buy frozen pike baits............lol

Eel is delicious. Skinning it is the worrying bit. I used to live in Amsterdam and got very attached to Paling. Chinese do brilliant things with them.

tried it and believe me the head seems to live on for a very long time afterwards, it doesn\'t appear to be just nerves either !

Like a number of people here, I too lived in Holland, in Almere for a few years although IMHO, smoked eel, gerookte paling, is awful, almost as bad as those salted herrings they swallow whole in Amsterdam. However I did catch some good \'uns and the way i was told to skin them was to hold them by the head, cut the skin behind head and use a pair of pliers to pull the skin off down to the tail.

I too think Eel is delicious. As Collossus says skinning it is the tricky bit. I was told to skin it then to drop it in a pan of salted boiling water for 20 minutes and then enjoy. It must have been good as even Swmbo enjoyed it too.

Jim.

A bloke shewed me years ago that to kill an eel whack it on the tail end about 2 inches up from the tip and it works.I#ve killed a few this way.tasted ok skinned with pliers ,dusted with flour shallow fried with loads of pepper.A few years ago they said not to eat them if they were caught in the wansbeck as they had too much heavy metal in them..iron maiden, whitesnake an all that.

used them myself for pike baits micky and the best way i found to despatch them is to hit them on the back above the vent, apparently there is a major nerve point there?

eels are superb baits to have during the warmer months when you\'re on a 4 or 5 day bivvy session as they remain useable after the more commonly used pike baits have defrosted and gone to mush. had a good few pike on them too although i do rate several baits above them.

I lived there over 20 years ago. There was a herring stall on every corner then. A lot less now. I used to find it very difficult to pass one without having a herring or an eel sandwich. Probably why my name\'s Colossus :D
