i once caught a codling of about 3lb wen i gutted it minuites after catching it there was three small hard back crabs still alive inside its gut

first time i ave seen out like that

I have an old sea bait book (cost 3s6d) which clearly states that hardback crab outfishes peeler! :o Diagrams of how to mount the bait using copious amounts of thread are included! Well now we all know where we\'re going wrong? :casstet:

Caught a fish with 10 big hard backs in, a fine mix of velvets edibles and shore crab. Some were still alive. Why not try some. Between me and you (and all the other 10 thousand readers) ask your local potters why they get codlings in their crab pots ?.

Hard crabs are an excellent bait for wrasse. When I first started fishing some of the old hands used dogger poultice. This was hard back crabs pulverised in a bucket and mixed with sheeps wool. You kow the stuff which hangs from barbed wire fences in the country! I once saw a guy catch an 8lb cod at Slatey Gut in Tynemouth on this bait. It worked best from an anchored boat over rough ground.
I like black lug tipped with mackerel, squid or mussel for whiting and rag or peeler crab for flatfish.

velvets are the easiest soft and smelly
anyway pull off the legs cut around the carapace
stick a flat knife under the shell and gentley scrape the meat out
cut the piss flap off
put your hook through the middle crush it together and
lash it on with fine knitting elastic
you can do this with any crab
im not joking lads ive had plenty cod using this method
why not its natural bait
but if you all try it and dont catch owt dont say im full of crap
coz nothing is certain in the present climate ;)

thanks for that one tony might give it a go the next time i find a crab but the times i have been on the rocks and had a look there dont seem to be any lol lol must all be collected in the summer whilst peeling

sean

sean its hard to get crabs this time of year mainly its a combination of
sea running \"dirty water\" crap tides during daylight bigger at night\"
sometimes at work for a laugh i get a big old paint tin burn some holes
in it put a weight in it and a coalie drop it over the quayside with a rope pull it back up after a bit its full up with baron green backs
and stick them in welders kit bags

I know it goes without saying when giving such information to anglers, bitJust to to make it clear to any antis out there, Ill say it...............KILL THE CRAB HUMANELY BEFORE DOING ANY OF THE ABOVE :exclam:
