Hi everybody,
well i`ve finally decided and bought the sl30sh now i would like your help once again in advice on what line to put on. it wont be used on the boat just beach and pier fishing perhaps 10 times a year so i need help with line + leader choice please;
once again many thanks.
finn;

sl30 has a the bigger spool so you could go for 30lb straight through with no leader considering the time of year id most likely use 25lb and the shock leader will be decided by what weight your casting
5oz =50lb etc my preference at the moment is berkley trilene,quite thin and strong to boot ;)

20lb line with a shockleader,for the beaches but if you are gonna be doing the rocks as well as beaches i got to go with bri 30lb line

beach wise i use 18lb penn super surf and drennand greased weasle shocker (60lb) if straight of rocks i agre with bri 30ld test then shocker or braid then a bit shock leader

Finn, depends on what beaches you are fishing if its beaches such as hadstone, whitley beach then go for 30lb trilene where a powerfull cast is not needed, then if you want to fish the rocks a shockleader can easily be tied on. The problem using a shockleader on the beach is if the beach is weeded up this can cause problems getting the knot through the tip eye.

A shockleader is used for safety while casting, it has nothing to do with presentation, or conditions or the type of ground you are fishing. If there is anyone within sight of you basically you should use 10lb of BS shockleader for every ounce of weight. The last place you would ditch a shockleader is on a popular beach where any type of distance casting is needed. This 30lb straight through business should only be used when there\'s no-one else about or you\'re fishing from a boat! I couldn\'t cast without a shockleader as it doesn\'t feel right.

If you read the reports correctly i think you will find it states WHEN A POWERFULL CAST is not needed, and i dont think anyone mentioned a shockleader was for presentation, and i think you will find that some anglers use a shockleader for a rubbing leader on the rocks rather than a shockleader. in future please read posts more thorough. I hope all anglers understand the safety and importance of using a shockleader and im all for safety, however would a shockleader be required with 30lb trilene (which is like rope) to put a bait 20-30 yards on a beach, of course not.
Why dont you try to be a bit more helpfull next time, rather than try to slag people off. And please dont start a slagging match. :)
Cheers.

The only time i do not use a leader is when fishing the rock edges,30lb straight through,as you are only plodding it out you dont need a leader,UNLESS you are trying to get distance in your cast.Then a shockleader is a MUST

Hey guy\'s chill. When I fish rock marks I never use a leader, I fish 30lb straight through. When I fish Whitley beach I use 30lb straight through.

When I am fishing on Blyth beach where a bit of distance is sometimes needed I fish 15lb with a shock leader. Which ever way you want to do it is not the problem. If you have someone that does not know what they are doing then that can cause a problem. As you said matchman (unless of course he\'s just plopping it) there would be no problem. As on somewhere like Whitley beach. Plenty of rocks at Whitley.

thanks for all your input,
i have put some 25lbline on (nowt special)
and about 35ft of 50lb red ice leader ( i think thats what it is )
i will practice in my local park first,
i have drilled a couple of golf balls and put split pins through them they are brill for learning with (they dont bed in like leads do )

erm ok....im confused, is this correct??

shock leader is the heavy duty line that stops your line breaking under the forces of rapid acceleration due to casting, generally 1 and a half lengths of your rod plus 5 or 6 turns of the reel is required ( isnt it ??)

if you are using a multiplier and the pendulum then your supposed to cast \' over the top\' ie rod starts parallel to ground and you pull and punch so that the rod travels from parallel to.. sort of 90 degrees to the ground when you release and the sinker flies off 300 yds to the weighting 40lb cod - sorry got carried away there :D

anyway what im trying to get me head round is this - how does the shock leader help safety of people on the beach ?? youre fellow fishin folk should be to the side of you and dog walkers and general public etc will be behind you ....the only people that your cast should theoretically threaten is swimmers or people in boats as the main force of casting is in a forward direction

so a shock leader would protect people on a river where you could hit the other side with a sinker thats broken free but on a beach surely the only thing youre gonna do is send your sinker on its way out to sea

am i totally wrong there?? cos what ive said makes sense to me ( but that dont count for much lol!!!) :P
ps im not taking the piss out of anyone with this!! bearing in mind me last few threads have started loads of sh1t !!!!

Anth mate ,this is what NESA is for to share information ,skills and tactics ... NEVER feel like you shouldn\'t ask as the ammount of help on here is second to none .
You can crack off and find your lead heading in any direction mate as it can snap at any point of the cast if enough force is applied ,just as dangerous is the very inexperienced angler using a multiplier for the first few times who \" gives it his best shot \" but doesn\'t release the spool in time and the lead heads back toward him or others .

I spoke to a lad coming off Blyth Pier last year and he said that some muppet had hit him on the back of the head while casting .......with a door hinge ,unbelievable .

have to agree with everything that has been said about using a shockleader,i will only use 1 when on the beach, dont use it when on the rocks as i am just lobbing it short. i honestly dont think i would be able to live with myself or go fishing ever again if i did hit some1 with a lead cos if it wouldnt be a fatality they would certainly need some urgent medical attention .
i have a slosh and will only use it for the rocks the line that i have on mine is 30 lb diawa tournement and never had a problem with it.

bottom line and in terms i can understand as well lol

your weight can snap off from the line anywhere between leaving the ground to where its intended to go

the shockleader reduces the chance of it happening,when i first started i didnt use shockleader and cast my weight backwards a few times

i mostly fish at night so there was no one around but on a busy beach or pier youd end up getting your weight shoved where the sun dont shine by some 7ft angry bloke with a sore heed :D

leaders for everything for me , iwent through a spell using 30lb straight through on the rocks but some marks just rub it doon in 5 mins . it keeps yer line in good nick.
