Ford Focus Diesel Cutting out

Just about to tow the car to main dealer and am trying to avoid a potentially large bill. Can anyone help?

Focus diesel estate 1.9 thingy 80,000 miles

Been cutting out whilst driving, coil light on, I was able to restart it on the roll no problem but this resulted in frequent bouts of sqeaky bum time.

Took it to a mate who's cleaned all the bits and changed the diesel filter but it won't start at all now. Been told it may be to do with the pump electronics, on-line info suggests speed sensor or accelerator pot. Any info greatly appreciated.

It's been off the road for a week, holiday starts today no wheels, need to get to Perthshire and Wolsingham to catch fish can't even get to Shiney to see me Nan

I've got a mondeo did the same.Once it stopped it wouldnt start, and cut out at junctions lights etc.Would start after a while.Took it(got it towed to a ford garage)and was diagnosed(£95 for diagnostics,£100 for the tow)just to give you a clue. Then it was a relay between the ignition and the fuel pump. There are 3 so I don't know which one it was.Total bill,if I remember right was £305.Mind no trouble since.:(
All done in a day mind,so no complaints about the service.

cheers for that m8

I've read of other people having exactly the same prob as you but mines not exactly the same, don't know if that makes a diferrence.

Mine was normally cutting out between 60/70 and would start every time straight away - still moving, clutch in engine off, cack yourself, hazards on, Guess a gear, engine on, massives revs then onward as if nowt had happened and start breathing again.

Since my mate Tex fixed it though it won't start at all, so maybe it could be anything, his wig's probably got stuck up the carbeuretta diesel valve hole or summat.

I was quite getting used to the thrill of the random engine shut down, was getting quite good at the emergency procedure - especially after coping with my first night time incident - the interior light comes on and turns everything outside pitch black, it does however make it easier to see the sea angler magazine you've got open across your knees.

Helicopter pilots can land with no rotors (or heads as happened in Vietnam a couple of times) Why did I take my car to get fixed?

Since my mate Tex fixed it though it won't start at all......

questionable use of our native language, I think the problem lies therein, somthing around the past participle of the the verb "to fix" ergo to repair or make good

the actually problem may be quite obvious, my diagnosis is that the trouble lies with that little blue oval thing at the front - technical term - 'badge'

It has the word Ford in it

EGR valve back of the manifold take it out and clean it. (Exhaust Gas Return)

£305 by return of post, paypal accepted.

If that does not work.................Fit a tow hitch to the front, Mark needs a new trailer.

Straights Marc? Could a non Ford specialist do this strange thing you speak of?

Yes mark does need a new trailer, the last one tried to kill him in front of an audience, it is evil and very long. :p

Cheers marc cheques in the post

Since my mate Tex fixed it though

I have another little confession to make - I was told six months ago the brake lines were rusting and would need replacing (well who's gonna see them anyway I thought) and about 4 days before the car came down with narcolepsy, a taxi man in Wallsend stuck his head out of the window and told me my brake lights weren't working "properly" now if he'd said that they weren't working then I would have had no choice as a responsible man to do the right thing, but being a chancer ...........

So, Car cutting out between 60 and err 80, Abstract brake lighting system, brake lines made out of cheese (Oops, back tires looking a bit Britney) and smoking heavily, me that is.

Tex fixed all that stuff, just got unlucky on the car starting up ever again bit.

I fully expect to be arrested for this post but I was obviously just waxing and that - I'll get arrested for that as well. Just chilling .....Oh Jesus will it end?

Only a one that is experienced in mechanical wizardry in the depths of back street doldrums or part worn tyres fitted here establishments can perform this legendary allusion.

Works just as well on a road infront of your hoose mind ya, just not as Harry Potterish.

illusion, phonetically drunk as well,

ah says, how do you spell illusion, she shes a-lu-lu-sh-iun.

Thats how i came up with that.

Hope phonetically is spelt right cos me spell chequer didn't pick it up.

Haway man Marc that's me ride we're talking about - please be serious I always treat this forum and it's posters with respect and suggest you do likewise.

I wouldn't toy with you if I had some info on a really specialised subject I know loads about like -

Would my mate know? I suppose I could always say it might be the

Yeah I'm going to try that approach, I should be on the apprentice, and no Marc I was only joking about the cheque Ha HA

Diesel filter

Diesel filter

Hi Charlie, don't know if this is any help but I used to own an escort 1.8 tdi (the enduro engine) and I had a similar fault just after a service.
It turned out to be a common fault, when the filter is changed it has an influence on the diaphragm in the housing where the filter screws into.
There is a small black primer on the housing that you pump by hand to prime the filter but when it is damaged you get irregular fuel supply.
I changed the entire housing and filter assembly, it locates on two studs, and all was fine.
I'm not saying that this is the same problem that you havebut it is an idea.
A taxi driver friend confirmed that this is quite a common fault but it may be worth your while doing an internet search,
Ian.

Cheers Ian comments will be passed on to my mate.

When the filter is primed after renewing it does tend to damage the diaphragm if it is old, if it starts spliting it causes the fuel supply to lose its vacuum so to speak and the car will run for about 30secs then be a swine to start after it cuts out, me mates car was the same but its goosed now!
That sounds like the right price for a pump Charlie, dont know how they justify it tho, bloody extortion!

Car problem fixed - binned the old fella and got a new one, under no circumstances will I reveal what I replaced it with as I feel my life is over now. The last spark of optimism and risk has finally faded from mine eye holes.
