Well i recently had the pleasure of trying out an Okuma Magnetix, they retail at around 60 quid and i think its a lot of reel for the money. it way out performed my 525GS.

I wish to god i had got an Okuma. I have the Penn Supermag Extra cost me £150. I.ve loaded it with 20lb red ice and at first i had nowt but bother with it. I call it my little raffler.I,ve got the hang of it now but i don,t rate it at all. Now if i,d only paid 59 pounds for the Okuma i could have also got a nice 7000 and still had 30 quid left.
I,m sure other people may disagree with my views.

Mick.

When I first started using a 525mag I found it way too fast. Tried cleaning the bearings out and on the advice of a seasoned user of this reel I put heavy gearbox oil in instead of rocket fuel. What a difference it makes !.....You still get a good cast but the control is much better and makes the reel much more user friendly. I find it an ideal setup for fishing with, the tornament casters will probably dissagree. Overall an excellent all round reel.

Wish i had tried that.

Could have been a dodgy reel but the endplate on my Smag Xtra cracked just from casting- sent it back - the replacement endplate cracked- got replaced again and I've sold it- a mate who had one had exactly the same problem- Penn reckoned it were a dodgy batch but that doesnt explain the replacement endplate cracking- I didnt have any problem casting with it interms of being too fast but after that experience I used the money I got from selling the Smag Xtra to buy an old green Abu mag elite.

If its a Penn you're after becasue fo the mixed ground I'd personally go for one of the old Supermag slidy's or the Tmag knobbly- there are a few places still selling them.

you cant go wrong with a penn normal mag put some 20/50 motor oil in bearings and there a pussy cat to cast with good distances still achevable
