Stuff Cod eat...

What half digested (or even un-digestable) foodstuffs have people discovered in the belly of the Cod they have caught?

Gutted my fish from last night and came across the inevitable Ragworm, a small sandeel, a small fish which looked a lot like a very tiny Blennie and some squid strip...

Funny thing was that I wasn't using Squid as bait last night so it must have been from someone else on the beach who'd fed him up for me ;):D

Tony The Cod From Last Night Were Full Of Sandeel And Small Cod Or Whiting Couldnt Recognise What Fish Was In The Biggest Cod White Mush And Backbone.

Well they certainly wern't fussed on my lug rag and squid i was trying to catch them with last night.:(

Iv'e heard of cod having bottle tops and the old style can ring pulls in their gut when been cleaned.

Urban myth perhaps?

was on a charter boat years ago when I were a wee lad and and one of the blokies gutted a monster cod with a flip flop in its belly

Had one last year that had a freshly filleted mackeral in it - just a head tail and back bone - very tom and jerry!, was on the wrecks, guessing someone must of been over it earlier and lobbed the mackie over the side

Fished a charter off the Maggie May off H/pool last year, guy using big bait,squid,2 macky fillets on a plrk.baited up threw the remains of the macky overboard caught a 13 lb cod with a bit of wood,a 1/2 digested whiting, flatty, and a brand new un digested macky skeleton with head and tail on.:question::question:

I saw one ages ago stuffed with tomatoe's, lemon chuncks and parsley.

And i bet that was a pic from a cooking mag Steve.

What happened on Friday, i had a fish for you as promised mate, just think if only you'd come back to weigh in you could have seen the real thing and posted about the contents of the cods stommach.

this is what was in one of the cods guts i gutted from arbroath along with a tiny eater crab must of fancied a bit tarter sauce with it.

I caught a 5 pounder off Roker one year with a folded up chinky tin in its guts:o.

Years ago when Dawdon pit was still there, any codling you caught from the beaches round there were virtually guaranteed to have coal and/or pebbles in their guts, due to them sifting the bottom looking for food.

It would be nice to check the contents of the stomach with the cod i catch.
One slight problem this season only caught one small toomy which went back.

Terry, Thanks for the offer but the missus would have thought I won the match and she would have held me to ransom for ever for some winnings.

Spoons

Spoons

My fly fishing priest has a gut spoon attachment so as to see what the trout are feeding on so you can match your fly selection to the contents of it's guts. Funny after 15yr of carrying it in my trout bag Iv'e never actually carried it on a trip to the sea nor tried to empty a cod's stomach with it... just wondering how many of you out there actually use this freshwater tactic on sea fish? If so, how successful is it? It is rumoured that certain species of fish switch on a tunnel vision to a certain food type at certain time's of the year and tide... the spoon could be a useful addition to the sea angler's armoury.;)
