Well as I am getting older I was thinking of taking up fishing.
I fancy shore fishing, at Whitley bay, Tynemouth that sort of area.
Or is there a better location on the North East coast not to far from Newcastle.

Can you catch good fish around these locations from the shore?
Also what kit will I need, rod reel ECT?

Just don’t no where to start, so im starting here.

thx...rob

Welcome to NESA mate...lots of helpful people on here

there'll be lots of varying ideas but to me the "basics" is the following:

  • 12ft Beachcaster
  • Fixed Spool (to begin with)
  • Tackle box - cantilever tool box style
  • Basic rod rest
As you're just starting off I'd spend as much or as little as you can comfortably afford or are willing to spend - who's to say you'll enjoy the sport?

Any tackle shop can furnish you with a combo' for £50...plus there's a million and one online deals

You can then progress onto waders, better rod rests, better rods, multipliers etc the list quite literally goes on...but 9/10 Anglers on here will have started with kit no too dissimilar to the above

Thats is roughly what i started with and i caught fish and learnt a lot.
I would not spend loads of cash till you have some experience and know if you want to fish and where you are happiest.
In that do you prefer beach, pier, rock fishing etc.
You see so much gear for sale with "used twice" on it,lots of cash spent and a couple of goes then people give up,fine if you have only spent £50 in total, not so good with £300 on the line.
Good luck.

I am not sure if I would like pier, shore, rock or any other fishing, I no I would prefer sea fishing but am not clued up on what is available in good fishing spots on the North East coast. I need your advise there.
I would like shore or pier I think. But if there are good spots say rock fishing I would consider it.
Thanks' for the replies.

A good "range" of fishing marks is from Blyth Pier to Tynemouth Beach...

A lot of novice anglers start out on the piers...I did a lot of fishing from Blyth Pier when I was younger

Reasons being it's an easy venue to get to and fish from - you can catch all sorts - Whiting, Coalfish, Flatfish, Cod, Mackerel in the summer etc etc

On the contrary...the winter is the North East Cod season...many a man and woman from this site will find themselves along the shoreline in search of fish over the next couple of months :D...I meant that mackerel is caught during the summer months ;)

Welcome to NESA Rebon :) You will get plenty of advice on here. You might find it useful to go along and just watch to get an idea first. Have a walk onto Blyth Pier and see what its like, read the posts on here of where people are going to and pop along and see what gear they have and if they are catching anything. That way you will be better able to work out what gear you need to buy and what can wait abit. The local tackle shops are all very helpful and if you mention NESA you will get a 10% off most of them:D

Ho Ho 10% that's me set up for about £45 then :)
The nearest fishing shop for me is the guy a Denton Burn, I can't remember the name, might call in there soon :)

Excellent, will have to start and spend some dosh to get started :)
Thanks' for the help.

No worries mate ;) Like Ali says, go and be nosey and ask lots of questions :D

If when you've got the gear and you fancy going out - put a message out to see if anyone fancies showing you the ropes...myself or others will be more than happy to help you as best we can :)

Hows about southwards from tynemouth to steeley,or the heugh or even further south, the north dont have the best fishing grounds mate, not by a long chalk

Thanks' for the kind offer, im sure some of the guys I drink with do fishing, ill ask around If i get nowere I will take you up on yjour offer :)

Just one last point, can you fish at say North shields on the banks of the river?
Or is that not allowed free? The nearest place to me is Newburn Haugh, but I would have thought that was a river fishing spot and you would need a licence to do that. If I remember right South Shilds has a long pier, maybe thats a good spot.
Right Im off to do more reading posts and finding out info.

thx...rob

I know that mate - but as he asked about Tynemouth to Whitley I assumed he was north of the Tyne and told him of the marks I knew that would best suit a beginner in that area ;):)

Hello Guys.
I took a google Eath image of the entrance to the tyne, the South Shields Pier looks good is that a good spot, see faint red circle? Or the Tynemouth side looks good also.

Hello Rebon and welcome to the forum.
I have never fished of the pier you mention, but iany pier is good starting point for new comers.
There was an old guy fishing next to me and Insano on Steetly last Thurs.
He must have been in his mid sixties. He was with a group of other guys on a mini bus. ONLY THE SECOND TIME HE HAD BEEN FISHING.
He had a basic beachcaster and fixed spool reel set up. I even ended up casting it out for him.
He had on an old yellow reflective gortex coat and nylon waterproof bottoms. Basic fishing box.
In other words he did not spend a fortune.

I returned to fishing couple of year back after a 30 year break. I bought all my stuff off e-bay second hand to see if i would enjoy it again.(£40 abu reel £50 abu beachcaster). Used waterproofs from work.
Promised myself if i did i would splash the cash and treat myself. I have now and am getting tackle such as modern beachcaser reel and rod, Floatation suit, new box with carrying frame etc.
I,ll not bore you,but its like out else if you like it you will invest in better gear eventually.

It will not harm you to meet up with local members who will help.

Tight lines Mick.
