Anyone see any reason why you shouldn't be able to shore fish with a 7" 'scarboro' centre pin? I know Stores s a great advocate of the Oil Bath Bearing Reel, but have you tried to get hold of one? I have a Tufnol/brass centre pin which I thought I'd give a go off the rocks and harbours. What do you think, am I wasting my time?

hi, talking to someone recently who used to use scarboros a lot he says why use a scarboro now when you have to come round the side to cast ,he reckons you can cast heavy line on a multiplier straight over head without any danger and get same distance

Well, to quote someone off the World Sea Fishing Forum when talking about fishing with Scarborough Reels, "let's face it, if it was just about the fishing, we'd have given up years ago!"

I have a red glass rod that I was bought second hand as a 12 year old (30 years ago!) that has been catching all sorts this year with a Diawa 7700 reel. Sometimes you wonder if we're all obsessed with buying the latest gear instead of getting out there and fishing. Have to say though, I'm a bit of a 'GearHead' with some of my other interests (mountainbiking and Off-Roading in my Defender 90).

Totally agree,so many anglers get caught up in the gear they have and want they want when lets face it,no matter how good your gear is if your bait ain't in front of fish you won't catch.
That is down to time and effort in learning why fish will be at a mark,when and why.
Not simply chasing the latest catch reports on the forums.
Go look at the local comps,same names appearing all the time,why,knowledge and skill gained from fishing.
Yes the right gear is needed but i feel at times we all get caught up in the hype at times.

I used to see a lad on the Heugh using a Scarborough reel. He used an odd way of casting it out. Bet it only wnet 30-40 yards. Straight off the right hand sides into the rocks. And he caught cod.
Mind i am talking over 35 years ago.
Never seen a scarborough used on a pier since. Seen them used on boats regularly.

Can't see any reason not to use them, other than the fact that you might need to learn to cast differently. Like the fact they winch so fast, handy over the weed over here. Other than Centre-Pins Ltd, is there anyone else that makes them?

Yep. Seen them before. They used to do one called a Lewpoly. Seemed about right although when I emailed them, they didn't think it should be used from Shore which is what I wanted to use it for. Any other ideas? Anyone up there repair or make these things anymore?
