what would you advise a beginner to keep in his box as basic gear ? , when i bought my new rod & reel the lad ( who was very helpfull) sorted me with some basic stuff a packet of aberdeen size 1/0 hooks some greys flapper rigs, std leads gripper leads and snap ? swivels . but i know i need to sort myself out with a lot more stuff. any idea's most welcome many thanks davey

if ya fishing at night mate, best thing to have is a spare head torch,

i carry 3 reels,mini box with swivvels,links,tip light batteries,beads etc,rig wallet with assorted rigs,elastoplasts,spare hooks,amnesia,scissors,filleting knife,2 spare headlights,plain sinkers and grippers,FLASK lol

Rig wallets are good as you can have your rigs ready made, so no making them with cold hands, but I would take some spare hooks and what ever line you will use for you hook length so if you loose a hook you can clip a new rig on cast out and repair the other etc. If you use a fixed spool reel a spare spool with line on can be good and not to heavy to carry.

And also think best thing I take apart from flask of hot tea :) is a cloth to dry hands as this helps to keep them much warmer.

Same as Jimmy's info really

Same as above plus spare spool of heavy line - can refil a reel or use as hook length if you drop your amenesia/super snood. Plus Scissors and FORCEPS to remove throat hooks - grap the hook at the bottom and turnthe fish upside down, using its weight to disgorge.

same as all the lads say a spare tip light can come in handy too
also a cloth is a must
a hat and gloves take no room for thoses realy cold snaps??
cant think of nothing more than what the other lads have said

get a first aid kit,you can get very small ones in plastic bags, cost a couple of quid from a supermarket, stick it in your rig wallet,i bought one a few years ago, never used it but its there
other advice would be to clean your gear as soon as you get home regardless of the weather and time, tidy your box and make sure its ready for your next session

A small chopping board is a good idea for cutting up baits. It will stop you wrecking your filleting knife. You could just use a small piece of wood.

There is a huge temptation to pack everything and the kitchen sink when you go out...best advice I can give is pack loads of pre-made rigs that best match the fishing situation you are going to be doing....as well as everything everyone else has said ;):D

Basics to me would be:

Rigs (lots)
Mixed Weights
Spare reel
Spare hooks
Spare snood line
Tip Lights
Swivels
Shock Leader
Electrical Tape (for tip lights ;))
Cutting Knife
Cutting Board
Plastic Bags (for your catch ;))
Headlamp (plus spare?)

Other essentials:

Flask
Warm Gear (even in summer you can get cold)

Hope this helps :)

hows about scissors for cutting ya bait and nail clippers for trimming any knots ya have to do

Scissors very important! glad i didnt forget them last night, wuz fishing with mussel and needed them to clip the old elastic cotton-thread off when re-baiting.;) would av gone mad without em.
