it's lead but not as we know it....

or is it, I just don't know

what is it??

as part of the ongoing ballast moving excercise I stumbled(!) upon some bags, well lots of bags, heavy duty polythene heat sealed both ends, not very big, 12" x 6" x 4" weight 10kg maybe more each and lots of then

contents are a grainy grey powder stuff, well lead coloured, and as heavy as lead, but wonder whether it is. Is that how lead gets bought commercial by people than need to buy the stuff for doing 'things' with??

bit cautious about just hoying it in a pan and seeing if it'll melt, so just wondered if that rang any bells with any one

don't think its iron as I guess it would of rusted (some bags are punctured)

be nice if it does turn out to be lead as we've got tons of the stuff, well at least one ton, depends on how much more is lurking in the lurky place where it was lurking.

be a joy to use if it is as well, just pour some into a pan and melt!

ring any bells?? Any ideas from any of you industrial types?

Hello mark have you tried using a magnet to see if its magnetic, and does it compress easily,if it does it could be lead.I used to buy lead shot to make cartriges and it can come in grain form.Hope this helps

did think about trying a magnet but didn't have one handy!!

the fact that there are no signs of any rusting whatsoever made me think its possibly not ferrous any way, left a wee pile out on the deck to see if rusts outside, but If it ain't rusted stuck in damp and 'orrible bilges I doubt it'll rust outside either

mark put some on an old spoon - and blow torch it outside - while holding your breath - seconds to melt if it is lead - make sure its dry though ,but i am sure you know that :D

Just chew a gob full and see if it gans shiney :D

Is it not the stuff shot blasters use? (whatever that is lol)

oohh, hadn't thought about that, it could be,

when I first saw it I thought the previous gadgy had been smuggling explosoids of some flavour

gonna take a blow torch down and give it to ell to try melt, while I retire to a safe distance, plymouth maybe

We used to use a similar stuff in bags when diving as it moulded to your hips in a waist pouch.

Since becoming to old to dive (read too many tabs, too much vodka and being a fat ******* now) I melted all ours down and into pirks.

Get it melted you soft ****e, you must be the one getting old now, the Mark I know would have tried melting it in Tracy's best pan in the kitchen with a tab in your mouth.

I'll keep a look out to the South West tomorrow for the mushroom :)

My emails dodgy at the minute, spoke to ell about the tyres.

oh it'll be getting the old hotty hotty treatment I did try a wee bit, but melting a 10kg bag of leady potential with a tab lighter was inneffective for some reason

No2 has moved a bag apparently and left a trail of what he thinks might be gunpowder in a road runner stylee along the deck apprently

Err .................That big bag of heavy grey powder? I tried to move it and staggered around the wheelhouse looking for somewhere to drop it again before realising there was a hole in the bag and I'd left a Yosemite Sam type gunpowder trail all over the axminster. Never thought to put a match to it :o

Also saw the small ziplock baggy with a sample in and was tempted to get me silver spoon out.

On a slightly different note I shifted some heelectrical rubbish this evening off of the Panzer and dumped it in the back of the car - drove off and felt some of it move followed by the sound of a small turbine starting up - WTF. Had a think, they are old Hi Fi's and dodgy cooker all mains powered and there's no plug socket in the back of the Cmax. Noise must be coming from outside. Stopped wound window down - VVFFFFffffffffffffffffff noise definetly coming from the boot. Lept out, tore boot lid open to find something had moved and switched the stupid hand held hoover on that's been lurking in the boot for ages (still to be used) I slapped my thigh said shucks and continued merrily on my way, after turning it off likes :red:

you've got a hoover in your car??

are you trying to tell us something? (other than you're worried being seen with a dirty car)

Car stunk of ammonia a while back after a winter beach sesh, no dead fish to cause problem, searched high and low for a stray peeler or bag of rag - possibly my mate geordies monkey suit did the job. Spent a month pouring peach flavoured shake and vac on the carpets and NOT hoovering it back up with one of those none sucking battery operated hoovers. Hence ..........the VVVVFfffffffffffffffffffVfffffff scenario.

sounds like shotblasting grit we chuck loads in the skip at work but without seeing it I couldnt be sure

can you not recycle it to make the world a better place? I made a new shopping bag out of rope that weighs 84kg before I put any nik naks and whiskey in it.

not a better place, but maybe a bit happier as we sent a few people scampering off to the scrap man

careful with them nik naks mind, they are made by dentists who put a small piece nik nak shaped tooth braking stuff in every 3rd bag
