Advice on lures, plugs or spiners to use for a bass fishing newbie

Ive posted that I'm going to give bass fishing ago before on this site and alot of the lads have been great with they're help and advice:D:D but, I'm still unsure weather to use plugs, lures or spinners?:confused: and how i would build a rig with them?:confused: if any1 can send a link to what I should use that would be great.

Kenny,never tried for bass on this side . Spend most of the summer over on Luce Bay and bass fish just about every other day. All I can do is pass on what i have learnt,right or wrong!!!!!

Started plug/popper fishing proper about 10 years ago. Popping for bass can be so exciting at times when you see them chasing your popper.

Some days the poppers do not interest them so think on your feet!!!! What has proved deadly for me over the last few years is using a controller float. My bass gear is a Greys 10 foot spinning rod/fixed spool/15lb mono/20g Drennan controller float/9foot mono trace and then the lure of your choice.

I have found Storm and Drennan Holographic sandeels to be very good. Sometimes the bass prefer the 3" lures,sometimes the 6" lures. I use 2/0 or 3/0 baitholder hooks otherwise the plastics start to slide down to the bend.

Once you have threaded on your sandeel onto your hook draw it through the water in front of you. If it starts spinning it is off centre so rethread it.

Started trying a few sidewider plastics at the end of last summer and the bass liked those as well.

Try different retrives,slow,fast,pause,just let it drift,try sink and draw. Try and think like a bass. Keep on the move. I have found dusk and darkness to be better than daylight. Bass have a large predatory eye and have taken them during total darkness on lures.

I am no bass expert but all I can pass on is what has worked for me. With controller floats you can fish fairly shallow water.

good post mate:)

a use that method also normally with a small redgill attached and have also used the holographic sandeels and have caught bass last year april had 3 schoolies on redgills on the controller float so it deffinately works

FANTASTIC MATE!:D A 9ft trace seems massive! how the hell do I cast with that lol? And how do I make it? I have a 8ft spinning rod and a 12ft leeda assasin will both do?
 
Nine foot trace ! Is it necessary ? 6/7 feet might suffice ? Its just what I tend to use. I just try and lay my plastic onto a flat rock/sand behind me and make sure the trace is not hooked up onto seaweed/rocks.

I am no bass expert but all I can tell you is that this rig works in Luce Bay

Tell you what though. If you want to catch bass you have to put the hours in. I am not a good angler by any means !!!! I spend most of the summer over on the MOG. I can catch any day over there if I want to - pollack/wrasse/LSDs The challenge is the bass !!!

Had more blanks than bass but love the challenge team.

Again i'm no expert but i managed to land a couple of bass last year on the lures. I used surface poppers over rough weedy ground.look out for areas with any structure, any area with a good current.

Water temperature!! "apparently" the magic number is 10 degrees with most fishing getting done June to September. Personally, being that its only the fish of breeding age that head to the warmer waters to breed leaving the "schoolies" (fish under 4lb) behind, i dont see why we dont give it a go earlier. Do we catch more fish in those months because more people fish for them then?

Watch the birds!! if you see lots of birds diving for bait fish the chances are its bass underneath the bait fish forcing them to the surface.

You can use both plugs and spinners. I prefer plugs as the will swim at a set depth and most bass marks are quite shallow. Have a look at this website for helping people starting out:
