Okay just got back from the west coast of scotland.. i tried spinning for bass on the friday however 3 seals thought it would be a good idea to ruin my day haha. Anyway we went out on saturday and arrived at our mark at around 1 in the afternoon.

The fishing started fast with mackerel and the occasional pollock being pulled in on feathers and spinners (yes the mackie are in lads haha)

3 dogfish were pulled in during the day which was cool because we personally havent seen/caught one before however the main attraction totally blew these dogfish out of the water.

just before low water at round 17.00 my friends rod went crazy and he picks it up to fight a fish in, this was the hardest fight ive ever personally seen the smoothound was darting in all directions and it was amazing to watch in the shallows with it thrashing about.

Anyways after alot of drama we finally got down to the rocks and pulled it in, what a beauty it was too ! we were too busy trying to get photos and and get it back in the water alive we didnt manage to weigh it. could anyone with experience estimate i weight ? i personally thought it will be double figure and the close up picture doesnt do it justice !
After we brought it in another bigger smoothound followed it to the bottom of the rocks and swam around in the shallows for abit ! it was very strange they must of been hunting together or something?

Anyways the weather was spot on and it was a brilliant days fishing !

Enjoy the pictures cheers lads

Hell of a days fishing there mate. You'll soon get sick of the dog fish over there after a few more trips. They are like rats.

Well done on a cracking session.

Hounds are notoriously difficult to guesstimate if you've not caught many (most guess way over), like Andy I'd put it at about 6-7lb. Still a cracking fish mind

cheers lads you will never guess what it was caught on...

il get you a better picture of the smoothound when i get my phone back, it does look skinny on that picture !

caught on a humble ragworm and 1/0 hook

I've had more hounds on ragworm than I have on crab, it's a very underrated bait for them. My pb hound at 10lb 12oz (just a baby really, but then I never did like fishing with the hordes at Selsey or Sandy Point where the better fish tend to come from) came to ragworm on a 1/0 semi-circle hook / 2 hook clipdown rig and I've had stacks of 6-8lb fish on a similar set-up.

Unless you want to target hounds to the exclusion of much else I'd always tend towards rag for bait (as well as having crab) as it will also pick you up Bass, Ray and Pollack (and Bream on the Solent marks) while crab can be a bit hit and miss for these

someone told me small hooks dont catch big fish however the best two fish of the last 12 months (smoothound and a big bass i caught last august) were both caught on a 1/0
Also i agree with you on the rag point it is my favourite bait due to its versatility, we were pulling in pollock on saturday with rag baits too
