12/8/07 A little pollack "King"

On this occasion we where out on "On your marks too" from East Tarbet at the tip of the Mull of Galloway, Scotlands most Southerly point.
Skippered by Mally, who is without doubt one of the finest boatmen I have met and who's tales of the sea are worth the fee alone.

We departed at 9am from the small bay at East Tarbet and within fifteen minutes we had enough mackeral in the boat for our days fishing.
Right lads what do you want to go for today asked Mally? Pollack, pollack and more pollack was our eager reply. We weren't to be disappointed!

We headed into Luce bay to fish over a shallow reef where we have had good results before and it wasn't long before the little pollack king "Alan" began to show the grown ups how it's done, again!

A beautiful, golden coloured pollack for the young man.

The fishing in this area of the bay was steady, with all of us catching decent numbers of fish in the 2lb to 4lb bracket that were great fun on our light tackle. After a couple of hours the pollack action slowed so it became time for a quick move to............ pollack heaven and huge cliffs!

Rounding the Mull Head is not an easy task with it's huge tide rips and whirlpools, thoughts of an early bath and a visit to Davy Jones locker came to mind but I need not of worried because within a split second we were around and looking up at a sheer cliff wall dropping into fish filled waters, now there's a first!

Seconds after our float fished mackeral baits plummeted to the depths, fish were on for all of us and we had around an hour of non stop action with nice fish boated and even bigger lost, cough, cough.

The little pollack king kept up with the best of us catching some nice specimens and he is certainly going to be one to watch in the future.

The "grown ups" managed to sneak a fish or two in under the pollack kings nose.

My new "On your marks" (Thankyou Mr Burrett) rod performed brilliantly and has now gone straight to the top of my personal list of must have pollacking rods.

This is without doubt my favourite type of sea angling and we could have stayed in that place all day and all night if the skip had allowed us but unfortunately the wind began to get up a bit and it was soon time to head back around the Mull into more sheltered waters, where we would try for wrasse and conger.
A strap conger of 5lb came aboard which was a new species for it's captor. Wrasse to 3lb were caught to that young man again.............Fantastic!

All fish were released for other anglers to enjoy in the future.

Nice one young Alan, you are now crowned the King of the Mull.

A cracking day out J.V.

Thanks all, I can't wait for another look over there, hopefully before the summer ends.

P.S. .......oops!.........I have just realised that I have posted in the wrong forum, maybe this one should have been in the boat section, however we were mostly within casting distance of the shore LOL.
