14ft Day Boat

Hi folk, Loved fishing for years & fished off my uncles boat out of seaton sluice last couples of years. Finally got a 14ft solar jiffy at such a steal (pennies), they very much like a dejon for the coming months & sunny days, (if we get any). Now rubbed down, re-painted, fitted out with new handrails etc & a 15hp mariner on the transom, auxillary is a 6hp yamaha, its not far off being ready to wet with water.
Im not daft & know its not going to take big seas but for skirting round marks inshore it should be fine right!!! well i thought so too but now have little bit dout after reading on couple of sites how dodgy dejons are. Im hoping this is not case & mainly down to skipper error etc.
Look forward to Helpful advice & knowledge folks but please dont kick me when im half down already haha

The Dejons don’t have a good reputation for seaworthiness, but your boat looks to have a deeper, squarer hull than a Dejon. The RNLI have a free scheme called “Sea Check” where they will take a look at your boat and give you advice about it.
When it goes abck on, you need to straighten your aerial up to get the best out of it, and do the VHF course. There are a few posts on here that list recommended safety gear and are worth searching for. Then add plenty of lead weights, traces and some good weather and you’ll have a great time.

Good luck with the restoration and post some pic’s when it’s finished.

Cheers kev, just passed the VHF licence & joined the local lifeboat to gain extra sea experience. The aerial has been replaced but like you say will defo keep it vertical. Got myself a good garmin gps/ sounder ( god they ain't cheap) & everything else I need to be safe out there, have even painted top of cuddy orange so I'm sighted easily god forbid if the worst ever happened

Hi Gramas, She's looking good. Just don't be tempted on "iffy" forecasts, 10-15mph westerly is where I would draw the line in a small boat. Squalls can pick up in seconds under black clouds, so let common sense prevail. Good luck for the season and be safe.

hi canman many thanks, took the dogs for walk round seaton sluice then headed over towards st marys, was lovely day till i counted 6 boats by the can & made me very jealous. Still few weeks off mine being completed & then have to find somewhere to launch.

she's looking good just keep in mind that the sea is very unforgiving, if it looks dodgy stay ashore, a fish is not worth putting you and your crew at risk:o. When the weather is right you will have agreat time:D. Look forward to your first posts, stay safe ;)

Have few mates from work that have boats & they have said they will keep me right, just looking forward to getting out soon
