Okuma Cortez Rod, Okuma Boat Rods | North East Tackle
I have one of these in the travel version and it a great little rod.
Used it in Norway last year and caught cod to 44lb and 30lb plus halibut on it.
So will handle almost anything around the northeast coast.

I also have a shakespeare tide water 20lb the tip action is a lot better than the ugly stick and not as expensive

I tend to use a stiffer rod for jigging and a longer / softer rod for shadding because some 20 to 30 rods can be a tad tippy for jigging but great for shadding i.e the Sonic range and the latest Fladen maxximus range. The early "grey" Fladens could probably fit the bill for both but are now discontinued. As a compromise I've got to agree with Chris that the Okuma Cortez 20 to 30 is a good all round rod and I can confirm he landed some stonkers with it.
I would give one of the newer interline a try.
almost ALL boat rods have awful guides and with braid on wrecks, they break.
Worst on guides are the Fladen. I have the newest 2015 solid carbon and had already 3 broken guides!!

tackle bargains have got the original grey fladen maxximus in ex display
20-40lb 20-50lb 20-60lb.for £63.14. i have had every one of these and would recommend the 20-50lb for both shadding & jigging. hope this helps.

Just been looking at the interline rods...
...hmmm, got me thinking!!!
tony i wouldnt mind a look at one of these myself as i have tried the three different classes of daiwa advanced interline 20, 30, & 50lb and found them to be quite stiff, i dont know if its down to the length 8' i think or there abouts but when bringing fish in they seem to cause torque on the line, for example fishing hartlepool a few years back 50lb class interline, had a good double on i thought shouting for the net only for a cod of about 5lb to break the surface.:mad2:
the maxximus though might be a different ball game.

which one do you recommend alan, just got a fathom 2 speed today and loaded it with 40lb power pro

oooh Simon--the 40lb braid may be on the light side?????--not for breaking strain,but for abrasion resistance---not many lads go below 50lb for chartering!!!

I prefer the 7ft rods for all round boat fishing, and there's only the one size rating available off hand I think its 15-35lbs
and the 8fts 20-40lbs.
duncans right about the braid though it should really be 80lbs or so. it isn't any thicker really 0.40mm but when your made up with heavy duty daylites / hookais etc there made up of
upto 60-70lbs line, and when your snagged up your main line will give up first and after 2-3 snags you've no mainline left, [seen it to regular]cheers allan

Exactly, main line should be heavier breaking strain than your end tackle.
People wonder why they keep losing main line. (60lb day lites it 20lb main line)

ah well live and learn its loaded now and at that price it will have to last me a trip,
the fathom only just took the 300 yards of the power pro so much heavier I may have problems getting enough on the reel to get to the bottom

where did you get it from keith is there a shop in the north east and is it suitable for both heavy jigging and shadding please
