Well with a bad back i never wnated to push it today so with family on baord we set out for a few hours macky bashing...as always with catching i mean fishing....the best laid plans dont go to plan.

After 4 hours of fishing between 3 of us we managed a total of 3 mackerel from 1/2 mile to 4 miles out but we hit a right range of species.

7 codling best 3lb
3 mackerel
60+ coaile best 4lb!!
2 ling best 7lb
gurnard
whiting
pouting
sandeel
pollack

Well we headed of home to fuel the boat up with a sad to say building sea behind us from the south east.

Until Sunday :)

Still not a bad days fishing though. I bet it was lovely out there today. Shame about the mackerel, I have been having trouble finding more than one or two a year for ages.

Might give south shields pier a shot one morning this week. No pics of your big coalie ?

Jonny:)

We were out this morning and we found that the mackerel were quite close in to shore. We started off up past the yellow can, absolutely nothing for an hour or so. We steamed further inshore, just off St. Mary's lighthouse and took 70 mackerel, 8 cod (best ~8lb), 1 pollock and numerous small colies, small codling (plenty size too but we were merciful and let them back to grow!).

All were caught on unbaited feathers / daylights, and even bare hooks (including some of the bigger cod!).

We left at about 6am and the sea was flat as a pond. Didn't want to leave but we had a box full and the tide was going out so we didnt want to get stranded!

How big do the coalies get off our coast Rich ?, I seem to be getting bigger ones than last year but not 4lbers yet. I'd target them deliberately if I thought I could catch big ones , the 2lb one I caught on Thursday took a pirk aimed at cod whilst I was retrieving it at full speed , and it had the whole treble in it's mouth.

Seen them 14lb before but my biggest from the Tyne is just over 8lb.

No pics today as never botheed taken the camera as the plan was macky bashing.

still a great haul seen odd boats off shields area this afternoon but the sea had got up think its more a south /easterly they close shields pier early :o

Dont know what the water clarity is like where you are Rich but it is still dirty up to about 7 miles from shore at Hartlepool. The East winds will only help to pack it inshore.

We couldn't get through the mackeral with 4" shads further off. Even 5" shads were getting hit every other drop, so I ended up fishing 6" ones which also weeded out the smaller cod.
