Well, spent nearly 8 hours getting battered by the wind / rain / hail today, kicking off about 2.30 at the spot I'd picked out yesterday. Early reports from lads coming off didn't seem to promising, but I was finally rewarded with 3 codlings; one about 4.5lb, one about 3lb & the other about 2lb.

T'was hard going though, a lot of lads out trying, club matches happening - also had Ivan doing his best next door - cheers for the handball mate! Might definitely be worth a return visit in the next day or two - btw all 3 fish were caught on lugworm, the various crab/clam/razor/mussel baits weren't getting looked at.

Cheers, Gary :)

Well done Gary, you deserve a medal for being on there tonight lol. I reckon Lug is always the best bait there, sometimes as a cocktail but quite often by itself. I think your right about the return visit, there should be a few good fish off there in the next day or so.

Jim.

Well done again Gary mate pleased one of us bagged up on such a hard night:)

Ps nee botha on the handball pleasure to get it safely up too hard to come by;)

great stuff Gary...I'm green with envy reading these reports - need to get out!

Tomorrow? - no chance

New Years Day? - ha yeah right!

Saturday? - possible...

am put off by the monster tides as well it must be said or should these big seas counter-act it?

yeah well done gary, glad somebody got something. we had a bit craic with you as you were leaving, unfortunately your idea of it fishing well as it 'fills up' didn't come to fruition(not for us anyway:D) we stuck it out till just gone midnight but i think 4 biteless hours on a night like that is enough for anyone:exclam: will probs fish its bits off for the next couple of days, same old story:p

Sorry the fish didn't come on for you mate, I think the sea's died away too much today to bother going back, I doubt much'll have been caught today.

well done, some nice fish there :)

were abouts on the peir were you fishing?

shaun

I was fishing along towards the bend mate, chucking towards the Bandstand along the edge of where the white-water was running. Funny thing about the pier is different parts will fish at different times, catching it right is the hard part!

Cheers all, Gary :)

well done gary, its funny how the fish turn away from certain baits, then the next rough sea its a different bait.

thats what keeps us fishing:)

Yeah, I meant to add that when gutted, all three fish were stuffed with sandeels - I don't know if this puts them off the "heavier" donkey-choker style baits that I started off using. Interestingly all three were also just lip-hooked in the corner of the mouth on the 2/0 pennel hook I was using above the 4/0 - perhaps indicating that they were feeding a bit shy, not exactly wolfing down the baits; on each occasion the big hook & the bulk of the bait was hanging outside their mouths.

Gary :)

:DGood result Gary m8!, I must have been only about 30yds from you towards the beach, I blanked:mad:, gannin back on 2morra but, Happy New Year!!!:D

Cheers Wayne, you must have been just past Ivan - he was fishing about 20yds down from me. Can't decide whether to revisit for New Year's day, think the sea might have dropped away too much - will have to check the conditions on the day.

Gary :)

Gary, I loved fishing the beach when the Cod were feeding on Sandeel, if it coincided with a good sea you were almost guarranteed a good night. It was as you say though, most of them would just be lipped and you had to be careful getting them in. I saw a lot of fish that were lost because people would try to rush them in.

I have mentioned this before but I have seen live Sandeels drop from a Cod's mouth and tipped my bait with them, I never ever caught a fish with them though lol.

Jim.

I remember fishing cullernose point last season when a mate of mine was using sandeel alone. he hooked a 10lb fish and a 6lb fish.

I was using blacks crab..... and caught a tommy!

smaller baits sometimes result in less bites but more fish am starting to learn(on certain conditions)
