525 mag settings

I have been using my 525 mag with a pretty free spool and very slight play on bearings, but with mags on full.

Feel like I am starting to get the hang of it and casting better, up to around 160 turns on the retrieve however far that is.

It's my first multiplier and I thought the thing to do was to feather the lead down to stop overruns, that seems to work and I have only had one bad one up to now when I had unstable footing on rocks and lost balance during the cast.

However, I tried a cast with the mags full off and the lead fairly sped off like, but the the reel over ran really badly early in the cast.

Is it necessary to keep a light thumb on the reel right through the cast with the mags off? or is there some other technique ?

Also is it actually worth turning the mags down or off ? does it add much distance ?

Thanks for help lads, great forum this mind.

alrite mate what works best for me is loosen ur spool slightly leave your mags on full till you get the hang then loosen the mags of a notch at a time you shouldnt have to thumb the spool if ya build up to it as thats what the mags are for thumbing it you will be losen distance as well as pleasure

Ta mate, it was daft I know to go from full on to full off in one go. It was a spectacular birds nest like.
Any idea how far 160 turns on one of them is ?

not sure all depends on your handle setting and alsorts mate but if ya arm aches realling in its far enough lol and i can imagine what its like best thing i done was buy the cheap spools of line some plain leads go on a beach and practice then if ya get a birds next cut it and it dont cost much will help alot

160 turns will be roughly around 110 yards. plus or minus 10 yard all depends on how full the spool is.

the further down the spool you get, the less distance per turn as the coils are smaller. this means any calculation near impossible

and remember you have to wind in the slack first which is a good few turns

i was sad enough to measure this out a few year back:D

done plus 320 turns a few times with 6oz alone.

dint bother with all that now, ............ just know when the cast was ' a guddin'

All to do with the chuck mate, get it right and you can let it fly until touch down. By getting it right I mean a smooth swing with the lead going out straight at an angle of around 45 degrees. I personally keep my thumb close to the spool as the lead starts going and if i've hit it right let it go freespool but if i've released to early or pulled it i leave it there to feather the spool and stop a nest hopefully. Hope this makes some sense like:confused::D

its hard to advise people on multipliers easy for me to say set reel up like this or that put this oil etc and line level but its a bit like riding a bike its a confidense thing,i fully understand for a lot of people wanting to change or start fishing for the first time wth a multiplier can be very daunting.

thro time when you are using them you get more and more confident like most everything.

wth this internet age you can get loads of info by just typing in google using a multiplier or put same search in google.

once again i recommend people needing info and wanting to learn is to do a search for john holden .
