I was joined by Jon, who also keeps his boat at Amble marina for an early start, sailing from the marina at 7.00 am. It was a beautiful morning, blue skies and no swell, so we headed down to Cresswell. Water clarity there was good, at around 12 feet, and water temp a mild 10 degrees. The codling soon started to come on board, though nothing of any great size. A wrasse followed, but then things went quiet. Lo and behold, a seal surfaced alongside. A few minutes later, I had a bite and reeling in the fish, a codling of about a pound, I encountered resistance and remarked to Jon I may have snagged. Anyhow, I wrestled the fish free, and on inspection, the cod was covered in teeth marks. A lucky escape for the codling.
We moved onto the next reef at that point, but the seal tagged along! Eventually, we gave it the slip and found some decent coalies, as well as more codling. I wouldn't say it was busy, but the fishing was steady, and it was good to have Jon along as we swapped fishing stories. Jon also managed to bag a wrasse, along with more coalies and codling.
Around midday, the wind picked up as forecast, and the chop became more uncomfortable so we headed back up to White Bank, where several drifts brought more coalies and codling on board, including a fish of 4lb. We were back alongside by 14.00. A fun day out. Thanks Jon !
