Absolute Nitemare

Alright Jonny, I was the lad who was with you when we got knocked to the ground by the water. Hope no one saw us clinging onto each other in an attempt to stop us from going into the DRINK :o Jokin apart mate, ive been down this morn whilst at work to look for some of your gear, no joy so far, but will put the word out in case it gets handed into the nick. You never know. Ive never seen the water turn so violent in so little time. Moved onto Spiles, Wet,Cold and fishless Waste ov time.

yous were lucky, I had my phone at the ready on the south pier.

I think th 2 lads in th middle were a bit worried 2 come off mate as 1 of th lads was a canny age so he probly's done th right thing staying on until the tide started going back.

seaham pier is sometimes a nightmare once it starts coming over , and the whole off the pier gets washed over , if some one stops on it could be another disasture for some ones family and then he club would have its hands full with greaving relatives and the dock company,if it does come awash anywhere please come off as quickly and as safly as possible .as the other lads on the site have said your life is not worth a fish .

blackrat are you fishing the police comp if you are i might join just so i can teach you how its not done unless you count rocklings then ive deffinatly won.will have to get a spell checker on my computer.

Ken, should the pier not have been closed in the first place? I find it hard to believe that a sea goes from calm to swilling over...in only minutes???
With what has happened over the past couple of weeks...it's only luck I suppose that another disaster didn't occur here...
Paul, I can assure you it did just that, although I wouldnt have described it as calm. Im Seaham born and bred, and I would have described it as fishable. Me and another lad had drawn the drum head, and spent what time we were on there, looking back every few minutes just making sure that the pier was not awash. After around 90mins, we saw the first one come over and we had no qualms about coming off. Thats were the problem started. As we made our way back, we met Jonny at around peg 25 who told us that he had lost his gear. The three of us then began to run and dodge between waves. Unfortuantly, waves run faster.
Was probably a one off, but can asure you, it wont happen to me again...

Ken...fishing it..!!!! I'm trying to run it lol. You could always help with the stewarding and your lass makes a canny cuppa...

Never been on Seaham, but I've had it on the south breakwater at Cullercoats, hardly a sea running and then suddenly you get a freak swell that comes over the top of it.

i agree it shouldnt have been in the comp as me and my mate had a look at the pier 2 hours before the comp and it was just starting to splash up on the bend and there was still a good 3 hours before high water im pleased no body was hurt

When i used to fish the heugh as a lad it was common for the middle of the pier to be awash with waves whilst the end of the pier was ok. In fact if you wanted to go off you had to wait for the tide to drop or time it and run. Nine times out of ten you were ok but if a wave did hit you you just ran up to the metal railings and jumped up onto the bottom one. The water went over you and washed under your feet.
Course those days the pier was looked after and had a fence and railings-not like now -dropping to bits.
Mick.

hi paul , wasnt there at the time but as blackrat says from what i heard it was fishable them it took a turn for the worse what i have seen myself , my main concern was if some one does stay on is that it could end badly ,that would be a tradgedy, and then the club and all anglers would suffer as well .

blackrat the misses cant make the cuppas now she is the same as me not on the commitee now , have not joined the club at the moment , have lost interest in trying to fish at the moment , even if i dont fish i will help you with stewarding the comp if needed, best of luck either way m8.

Will hold you to that mate...Can just see you in a reflective Police Coat lol. Will call round and see you..Cheers

Well folks looks like my fishing's over for quite a while as i had all of my gear washed in2 th sea 2nyt whilst blanking on seaham north pier in the badger comp:( so some lucky angler will probly reel some canny gear soon. Very lucky not 2 b crabfood tho 4 which i'm very thankfull also pleased th 3 other lads got off th end as the conditions went from being ok 2 very dangerous in the space of 10 mins hope nobody else gets stuck on there. I wud advise all u mad fishermen not 2 take any risks as its not worth your life.
you have been very lucky!
