for the bginner i suggest the brigade hut up to bout 200 yds past gate you;ll need to cast bout 40--50 to get past th snaggy bits

bait to use crab and rag also a bit bluey could help, but beware the crabs thy can be a nuisance but always a chance of a good plaice, alo flounder, dabs, coli and undesize cod and whiti
best on flood tide to top and bout hour back on ebb tide

Yer, sound advice from the former poster. if your static fishing further up the pier then you need to get out at least 70yd to have any chance of not getting snagged up, the further you chuck the less chance of a snag. I'm talking about fishing the seaward side here like, fish the river side and yer doomed when the lead starts going out unless you're very experienced and know the few marks where you can fish into the river.

If you are a beginner mate you may be better off fishing the river until you get the hang of casting. Try Brighams or Jarrow Park they are both virtually snag free and there's plenty of whiting and flatties about. Try bottom fishing with ragworm.

I agree with Thunderpants... dont bother with the pier untill your decent and casting and happy with what your doing as most marks on the pier are snaggy unless you cast about 75yds+. Try Jarrow, Hebburn, the B.A carpark... loads of spots in the river where you wont lose a lead every throw....
