Is it any wonder that Summer shore fishing results in poor catches when boats are netting so close to the shore.........in the harbour :o

That was a high water thisafternoon, Steve.

At low water, you\'\'d be standing further out than the gulls in the picture to cast.

With this boat its usually a case of definitely within casting range. Seen it quite a few times, once very close hand. Was fishing between Brigade hut and First Gate when it dropped anchor about same place as in the photo. a small boat then ran a net out right upto the pier wall about 20 yards down from where I was. Couldn\'t belive it, just packed up and moved further up (wasn\'t catching owt anyway).
Always been curious about what they pick up there. Got the probable answer about a month ago when I was down there one morning at first light, quite a few Salmon/Sea Trout throwing themselves about right in the area where the gets dropped.

Aye Mick, I\'ve seen it there before (and even closer inshore).....it\'s no stranger.......just happened to be out doing some photo work for my job today and thought I\'d get a pic of it this time.

I would\'nt think they were breaking the law,no doubt someone would have contacted the relevent people in the past, theres nets off Blyth pier and they are for Salmon as far as I know, they had them tied to the pier last year but only for a short time :o

I\'m assuming so, Macky - as I\'ve seen it putting nets out / bringing nets in there previously. The first of the floats is just barely visible over on the far right of the photo......there were more out of shot.

This pic was taken on a small digital camera, so you can\'t really see very well - but I did take some on 35mm with a 300mm tele lens.....I\'ll check those tomorrow.

aye tc i saw that today when we drove past ,had to rub my eyes thought i was dreaming

i heard it caught a few fish and 4 swimmers [ it was that bloody close in it coulda been true ]

thats one of the salmon boats ! dont know wot the crack is about being in the harbour though ! sometimes they do surveys on the ammount of salmon-sea trout entering the tyne and that is the place where it is done next to the brigade hut ! its a catch tag and release !

its fishing for salmon and is licenced to do so. the method they are using is t nets. they are not pulled behind the boat but are checked every so often to see if any salmon are in them. i\'ve seen him get some good (well over 15lb) salmon out of them in previous years.
have you never seen him there before tony ?
he usually has his nets on the seaward side but its not uncommon for him to be in the bay, hes been doing it for years, part of the fixture and fittings by now.

As long as everything\'s legal and above board, that\'s OK then........

Micky - re.. the \" have you never seen him there before tony ?\"

Have a look at my 2 previous posts again........lol

If it\'s acting legally..........nuff said.

i was walking on the pier yesterday evening and the nets were about 10ft from the pier at the brigade hut i was told a while back that the salmon shoal up in that area on there way into the river
