Took my lad down to Amble to fish the pier for an hour and a half. I caught nowt but he finally listened to some instruction and grasped the cast. Was able to get his rig out a bit and was rewarded with his biggest flattie yet. A very happy 8yr old. Last outing was a cold blank and he said he didn't want to fish again till summer but that's him keen again.
Most exciting thing for me was a boat leaving harbour..... "He's miles past my line" I thought. Wrong! My rod nearly took off but I managed to grab it. I was reaching for my knife to cut the line when it eventually broke half way down my shock leader. Lucky I had the drag set or it would have been me and the rod waterskiing behind a fishing boat round Coquet island.
Waited for dark and I headed down do Howdiemont skeer after no fish in my last 4 outings.
Put some recent instructions into practice re bites, baits n stuff and played it cool. Used frozen black and peeler crab secured with 15lb mono as id left my elastic in my other coat pocket. Muppet......... But it seemed to do the trick. Half an hour later I reeled in a healthy 5lb 3oz cod closely followed by a flattie and a 2lb coddling. Happy with that bag I came home, tucked my kids in bed and I'm now supping a cold one, well pleased with my day.
