Paul, it's a Lesser Weever, They have three poisonous spikes on thier black dorsal fin, and best remove the hook while holding the fish with a rag. hope this helps.

That is what is locally known as a blenny. Horrible little things caught in the hundreds at Hartlepool. What ever you dont dont pick the little blighter up. They have spikes on their back - one spike in the hand and your on your way to hospital and will have a very painfull few days. See my shore report on the Heugh 30/7/09.

Thanks for the info, someone once told me that 9/10 fish with yellow tails carry poison, i thought he was joking , i din't dare remove it from the hook anyway just incase so i told him to leave it on for live bait :red:, luckly it must have fell off, lucky escape i think.

Sorry mate it's known locally as a weaver they also have a spike on their gill covers so be extra careful when putting it back.
A blenny is totally different small fish and no way dangerous.

blenny is different to weever mate, blenny aint poisenous but can give u a nasty nip

Yes, as everyone has said, it's a weever.
-Note we only have 2 species of venomous fish in our waters, the lesser and the greater weever, nothing else is venomous no mater how spikey and ugly it looks.
The only fish that is poisonous to comsume as far as I know is the Sunfish (though I've a niggle in my mind that there's is something else that turns up in the summer down south).
