Bait Quantities

Just been reading a few posts about poor bait quantity when buying rag and lug. If you buy a pack of rag/lug should the shops not state how many your buying or net weight in a pack. Some of the lads are saying they are opening they packs and finding 5 worms in for £2-20!!!

it depends on what shop it is mate rag is normally sold on weight tho i must say the mud in with them does add to the weight as well so either they got 5 big worms or a lot of mixer in them lug is normally 10 worms for 2 quidish

as i understand it:confused: heh heh lug is sold by the worm or multiples of:exclam: however if the worms are small a lot of dealers will increase the quantity,if that makes sense:exclam:

rag on the other hand is sold by weight, often in 2oz or 4oz pks, although dealers will sell 1oz(school kids on hol) or any combination of.

the average cost of rag seems to be about £1 10 per ounce.

how many you get depends on the size, how much water, vermic, peat or whatever is in the packet, all adding to the final weight

the golden rule is look at em before you buy/ leave shop:exclam:

if they dont meet your requirements dont have them:exclam:

i dont shore fish, but as i see it RAG is no longer a MUST HAVE bait
theres plenty of options, prawn mussel bluey mackeral squid crab razor and so on

wonder who the dealers blame now, that seabait no longer exists

I never leave the shop without looking at the bait. Make them wrap it on the counter in front of you. I must say that other than the lug I have had from Lewis tackle in whitley bay it has been very poor quality from everywhere else this season.

reel sport bait has been canny for me so far and had some canny rag from ID. Although starting now to explore cheaper alternatives and supermarket bought i.e. bluey, mackerel, muscle, prawn and balti pasties!!!

not gonna slag/name shops but ive had very poor ragworm this year, some dead by the time ive reached my shot,(bought 1hr before)i personally think the sawdust they come in either kils them or damages them, ive had bait from same supplier/same day and 1 in pete and 1 in sawdust, what a difference, gettin bit everytime i pick worm up in the pete, havin to shake the little fu****s in the sawdust

If Vermiculite is used on Ragworm it should be riddled first to get rid of the dust as this chokes and kills the worm, fine sawdust will do the same.
Also never put Lug in the above as this will kill that also.
The Peat will keep Ragworm alive quite a long time as long as its not soaking wet.

Yes your right there mate on both scores always had good bait from Lewis 😉

Rag from reelsport Hebburn is normally spot on like. Don't use it much now as I use frozen crab most of the time, there's no waste with this as what you don't use you just hoy back in the freezer after the sesh. You've just got to make sure you don't pay a quid for a one the size of a twenty pence piece. Get a decent deal and it's more cost effective than rag and a better bait most of the time IMO.

dont no if its me but asking for a packet of worms in a shop they are already wrapped.

me personaly i feel crap asking the shop owner to open packet up to see if they are ok.

Same.
I just put it down to experience. If they're good i'll go back, if they're poor they'll not see my money again.

A can see that everyone has there own opinion on how the bait should be when it leaves the tackle shop, both in quantity and quality.

What I dont understand is why people blame the tackle dealer when there something wrong, as soon as that bait leaves the shop, its your responsability. Sometimes bait (i.e. ragworm), may be brought in by the diggers and be big, not the tackle dealers or diggers fault, that's all they could obviously get, and rag is sold be weight so 5 or 6 big worms could make a packet.

Also, my ragworm that I buy always comes in sawdust, and I've never once had a problem with them, in fact, Ive had some rag I bought last up to 2 weeks in sawdust, so theres nowt wrong there... :)

Big ragworms = juicy cod bait :P Love to make cocktails with big rag, Makky, Rag + mussel.

But big lug, Lug + Mussel Redipped in mussel juice + Lug+Crab oozing... The fishes just cant resist :P
