are live cray fish any good as bait as ive just bought a bait trap/net off ebay and was thinking of putting it in decent size rock pools while im fishing with other baits then use what ever gets caught in the trap like cray fish

Is that legal?
i've always fancied chucking a few lobster pots out at low tide and returning the next tide for a lobster or two for the table but not sure if it's allowed?

Never thought of catching cray's for bait tho'... good idea..:)

unless im mistaken the indiginous british freshwater crayfish is a protected endangered species, it is therefore illegal to take them. however the north american crayfish is taking over from our cray, it isnt illegal to take those. telling them apart well thats another matter. the north american one is much larger than the british one, but other than that cant tell you. what i can tell you is that you will not get crayfish in sal****er.

i have caught a cray fish with my rod on blyth beach chucked out and reeled in to bait up againg and my hook had went straight through its head lol still wiggleing like mad so cast back out with it on and it mush have flew off lol but it was a good size cray fish about 3inch or somit im gonna try this tactic with the net and see what happens

i would say its legal as its not a lobster pot its just a bait trap so you can trap your bait i would have said lol

cheers scott

think you can take 2 lobsters per day and 8 crab.
must all be size tho.
dont quote me on this as iam sure someone might have different views.
only keep what you want and put the rest back.

It is illegal to take signal crays without a licence though. Not through any sort of fondness on the EA's part towards the horrible little sods though - I think it's more that they're worried that no one can tell the difference between our native endangered ones and the undesirable newcomers. Plus, I think there have also been quite a few cases of people setting traps and not checking them often enough and harming otters and water voles and the like.

Like flatheed says though, you won't find them in salt water.
