Bands a while ago

Av just been f**** around with watching old vidies of bands from the 70's onwards. I've just watched that live performance on TOP of gene genie by bowie, absolutely class. Anyway I used to frequent the mecca and city hall regularly and got to see some class bands, my favourites were Genesis followed by Sabbath then Uriah Heep and the list just goes on and on.
What's the best concert you guys have been to or what's yer favourite band like, okay:D

I had to go to loads of gigs in the late 80's / early 90's photographing bands & musicians for various record companies & music agencies; occasionally I'd even get to see artists that I enjoyed! but much of it just washed over my head. Of all the gigs I attend as a "fan" I think two probably stand out; Glastonbury 1994 when I was there, amongst other things, to photograph some new band called Oasis (who were frankly pretty terrible) but the highlight of the weekend was watching Johnny Cash from the side of the stage give a blistering performance.

The other was Frank Zappa in 1988, which turned out, sadly, to be his last tour. As a lifelong fan I still miss the old bugger - a real rare gem on the music scene.

Several other shows also spring to mind - Bo Diddley & friends (1991 I think) was probably another highlight. I must trawl back through my old files of negatives at some point as I'm sure there are lots more that I'm forgetting at this time of night.

Gary :)

First gig I ever went to was the Police at gateshead stadium early eighties. U2 were a support band among others and I was hooked. Not a massive fan of some recent music but they have done some good stuff. Last year I saw Metallica, anthrax, megadeth, slayer and iron maiden. I am seeing Guns n Roses at Newcastle in a couple of weeks with Thin Lizzy as support and going to download next month mainly to see Metallica, one of the support bands is Tenacious D ( should be a laugh to see Jack Black )

As I have got older my music has got louder :D and Iwonder why I get ringing in my ears :D

Jonny

Can't actually remember what the first gig was I went to, would have been mid/late 70's sometime, but I remember the Undertones at the City Hall in '78 or '79 I think as a particular highlight from my youth.

Gary :)

Yer, Johnny Cash, now yer talking, I liked him best with the Highwaymen though, jennings, kristofferson and nelson. total class like

ACDC

Seen them in the UK, Germany and Holland and they put on one hell of a show. Germany got a little obnoxious when pretty much every track ended up having a veeeeerrrrrryyyyyy loooooooonnnnnnnnnnnng guitar solo, so by the end of the gig you were pretty much bombed by them all.

Whitesnake and Iron Maiden put a great live event on as well.

Changing genre just slightly  I Saw Brian Kennedy as a warm up act years back for Clannad :p and he is an awesome liver performer.

Dire Straits were brilliant - I still remember Mark Knopfler stopping during the intro of a track, saying "let's try that one again" when he completely messed up and subsequently aced it :)

Rod Stewart - awesome. Fan or not, he is a one man show and doesn't even need a band to get any crowd behind him.

Bryan Adams - superb, whether you're a fan or not.

Queen - there aren't the words to describe how Queen get the entire venue jumping. Unless you've experienced it it's impossible to describe, so they'd probably be my number one choice for a group.

For me, the best I've seen as an overall gig (so ignoring "Monsters of Rock" and similar multiple-group festivals) was Bruce Springsteen. I'm not that big a fan but the show he put on was just stunning and hats off to anyone who can get up and actually play the notes and sing the songs without miming or using any of today's techno-nonsense helping them along.

Local bands: I'm going back a few years here but the "Flat Back Four" were a group of local lads who often played the pubs and clubs in the north east, and they were great, covering classic rock tracks.

Overseas - I saw The Dillards years ago in America and although not everyone is a fan of Bluegrass, they could really play, and it was impossible to not get swept along by it all :)

You could say I have wide and varied, eclectic and possibly polar opposite tastes

Now, who will be the first to admit seeing The Dooleys live ?

:D

I very rarely signed away copyright Tony - I'll have a rummage & see what I can find. All pre-digital era and mostly black & white negative so will probably need to print them up - also have some on colour slide, but haven't the facility to scan them unfortunately.

Gary :)

Found a few things Tony; unfortunately most of the prints I have to hand are 16"x12" folio prints & too big for my scanner - I didn't tend to hang onto most of the repro prints, but managed to find one or two.....and scanned a couple of things from books etc. (so resolution on one or two is a bit ropey!).

I really need to go through my old files, haven't looked at a lot of the stuff for years, but here's a wee taster...........

And a bunch of stills that I shot at the "Connected" video shoot were cobbled into the cover for their next single:

I'll try & spend a bit of time in the darkroom this week & knock up a few more - got plenty of time as the fishing / crabbing is so cr@p at the moment lol!!
