Beginners advice?

Can anyone suggest a good book or two to help me get started with sea fishing? Also what kind of gear should I be looking to buy with regard to "basic sea tackle".

As far as rod and reels go I'm thinking I should try and get summat second hand to see if I'm gonna stick at it so thought I should check out the admag etc. Although as I'm sure to need gear for the wife too (she loves fishing more than me!) I did spy these http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Pair-of-DAIWA-13ft-Beachcaster-surf-rod-WITH-reels_W0QQitemZ110164626382QQihZ001QQcategoryZ11729QQssPageNameZWDVWQQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
as a means to get us both started very cheaply.

What do you think? Too cheap?

TIA

hello and welcome krash:)
get yourself along to any of the local tackle shops who should be able to give you some advice on what to buy and not to buy. i would say have at look at the ron thompson gear, good prices and canny quality for what you pay

Looking to fish tyne/wear areas initially (we live in Consett).

I know where most of the tackle shops are too, had a good old mooch around Fishing Republic in Sunderland the other week and was a bit bewildered with all the various gear.

Krash hello mate. I live in Consett too. I am originally from Hartlepool so i started fishing down there and picked it up.
It really is easy to start up and you can do so very cheaply.
I have a large fixed spool reel which i bought off e-bay a while back for £8 and you can have it if you want.
I now have bought better gear and it is surplus to requirements.
As to a rod i saw one in the new shop at Consett where they used to sell videos and is now called cash converters for about £15. It was a telescopic type.
If you pm we can meet up and i willl show you what you need as to gear and methods.
I also buy the sea angler magazine monthly and this is very informative.

Cheers Mick.

PS Sea fishing is not that much different to the guys who fish at the resevoir with fixed spools reels.

Cheers Mick, taking the family out this afternoon so I'll keep an eye open for the magazine.

I sometime fish the res with my Daiwa Wilderness spinning rod but imagine I need the bigger rod to get some distance on casting and for the heavier lines needed.

I think I may even have met you once before in a professional role, think you took a shoplifter away from my store once, I'm the manager at Lidl in Consett town centre.

Krash my honest opinion would depend on whether you're actually hoping to catch something or not ;-) If you're wife is already and angler and you're planning to fish with her then you'll need gear that can meet the type of fishing she does.
But if you want to catch something then find yourself a nice spinning/bass rod of about 9' and a reel to suit with line around the 12lb mark. It'll give you the choice of fishing piers, harbours and estuaries without being overly light. Sinkers of about 2-3oz and you should be having regular fun with flatties, colies, codling, the odd eel, mackeral if you catch them still here and soon the better sized numerous winter whiting. Best get experience casting and gearing up than get a load of gear that you'll soon get bored of watching doing nothing in the dark...

We both fish a bit of coarse and Derwent res for trout already. The gear we have between us comprising a couple of match rods, a Daiwa 10' spinning rod and a couple of cheap carp rods from work (which got us started off about a year ago and the bug bit).

Luckily I seem to be quite a decent caster naturally (legering up the resevoir).

Krash. Get yourself down Roker Pier ASAP with your carp rods and a couple of spinners there were plenty of mackerel and coalies today. I got a couple on the float using sprat. On your way down you can call into Rutherfords Angling.
Andy's been fishing nearly as long as me and I'm sure he would be pleased to advise you on the right gear.

aye paul is right there, i started back a few years ago a few shops gave me no advice ( wont mention names though) but found game fishing to be a great help, i was going to spend a large amount of money but they steered me in the right direction on what i should buy just to get back into the sport:)
