It depends on what your budget is and what sort of lure weight you want to fish but there is a good Diawa rod and reel combo for about 35 quid. Think it's called the d-wave.

No wonder your heads battered with such a broad price range. i'd spend more on the rod than the reel, i'd probably go for a bushwacker and a shimano alivio reel.

worth having a look at savage gear roadrunner travel rods too. You can get them for about 40 notes and some of them fit into a suitcase so no extra charges or mess on with airlines. Mrs pulp uses one, they are a bloody good rod for the money. Balance it with a 2500 diawa procaster or a 4000 shimano exage.

Another vote for the bushwhacker here. I bought mine on the back of the lads on here saying they were good rods for the money and I love it. I also got a shimano stradic 4000 off here for £60.

Dont forget the hto lrf rods aswell very good vfm the heaviest in the range and also the abu range. And finally as already said the bushy and shimano reel....;-).

Before you jump in and buy a new rod its worth thinking about the weight of spinners/ lures you intend using and matching your rods casting weight to them .

thanks a lot for the advice guys I decided to start with the diawa d wave combo as a budget set up..got it today very happy with it. Good advice cheers pulp. I like the look of the bushwacker as an upgrade and will check out the other recommended tackle.
