After the poor shore fishing in shetland and late shifts at work the rod had been gathering dust so decided it was time to get a night session in whilst off work. After hearing reports of good numbers of sizeable codling coming from Whitley beach, I managed to get my hands on some lugworm and brought a flask of frozen crab. Met up with my mate and sea looked perfect with a good roll coming in we picked our spot, with the beach packed with people with the same idea. It was still light but it was fish straight from the off for my mate and myself either missing bites or hooks coming back cleaned but when I eventually got into fish mine where coming in lip hooked whilst my mates fish where swallowing the hook down, I eventually found as the tide flooded hard and casting a bit further I was hooking up nearly every cast. Fished from 7-10.15pm and ended the night with 8 keepers between 1 1/4-2lb one under returned, my mate went home at 9.30 with 8 keepers and bloke next to me with 10. It's been a while since I've had as good a start to the winter and if the fish stick around then by dec the fish should pack on a bit of weight.
