New venue for me last night, fancied a change and its been a while since I've fished an open beach so decided on Shields. With high tide at 11pm I arrived at the beach just before 8pm and got set up about half way between the Sand Dancer and the coastal gun (decided on the south end of the beach for the sake of quietness as much as anything else as I've no idea where any marks on there might be).
Ususal tactics of two rods, two hook rigs, 1/0 hooks with rag and bluey for bait. One rod was varied between medium and long range and the other dropped in what little surf there was.
First cast came back untouched, next one I dropped the close rod no more than 15 yards out and it wasn't long before the tip was going mental (braid
) and the first Flounder was on the beach to save the blank:
And thus was the pattern set. It was a fish a chuck from then on, all bar a couple coming from no more than 15 yards out and the general stamp was pretty good too with plenty of fish over 30cm:
as well as a few double shots
I had the whole place to myself apart from the odd dog walker and it was a lovely evening to be on the beach (though it got a bit chilly as the sun went down):
After dark the Coalies cam on, nowt special but some stonking takes in the shallow water on braid
All in all a cracking nights fishing, well over 20 fish with at least 15 Flounder and 8 Coalies. Most fish came out of the surf with just two Flounder and one Coalie coming at any sort of distance and interestingly almost all the fish in daylight came to Bluey and then after dark they switched to taking the ragworm instead. Finally packed up just before 1am when I ran out of bait, was still getting fish right up to the last chuck.
