Blyth pier 22/04

Had a group of kids out on the pier and caught a few small flatties, whities and coalies. Not much to report really apart from oneof the rods would have been pulled in if it wasn't for the last eye. Some guy standing next to the kids grabbed the rod and pulled in what can only bedescribed as a monster. It was a flatty of probably around 5 pounds. Unfortunately the kids were only using light gear and the hook length snapped when pulling up the pier - probably rubbed against the pier when pulling up. I've never seen a flatty this size off the pier or anywhere else for that matter. The biggest I've seen is about 2 1/2 lb and this was a monster compared to this. Has anyone ever caught one or seen one caught in this area that big?

Excellent Darren...never seen a flattie that big let alone caught one :)

...you do realise that all the lurkers will be on Blyth Pier tonight trying for that monster ;):D

Had some monster sized plaice, real bin-lid jobs, from a mates boat just out from the East Pier a few hundred yards, this was back in the mid 90's - always wondered how come we didn't see them that size off the piers.

A lad next to me had a Plaice that I would guess was at least 3 1/2 lb but that was a few years ago. You can get some good ones from around the bend area casting onto the ground inside the pier.

Jim.

Bad luck on you's not getting it landed Darren, would have made the kids day and no doubt yours :D.
I seen a lad catching a mixture of Flats from Peeping Toms rocks fishing very close in,probably 15-20 yards lob,he also said he'd had some nice Eels fishing at the same distance.
The other pointer i got for Plaice was casting towards St Marys from the end of the Pier at distance, apparently theres a nice sand bar there or most probably the dredged area of the entrance to the harbour for the shipping channel

I hope anyone who goes for it catches it. It was from the top right of the pier casting towards St Marys (as you said Alan). The worst thing is I had only been teaching abou the importance of drop nets on piers about 2 hours before we were fishing but ever thought one would be needed this time of year. Suppose it just emphasized my point though lol. Only had a tiny piece on mackerel on the bottom hook. Think the kids were buzzing enough just seeing it but it would have been great to get a photo. Still can't get over the size. Would love to be able to put an exact weight on it but never seen one anywhere near that size. Maybe next time?
