Hello mate,
could I suggest before you even start thinking about a boat get yourself enrolled to a course on safety/navigation.
You can do this at south shields nautical collage and will help you and your crew and give you a little insight into going to sea.

The courses I think run though out the year and cover all aspects from starting at competent crew right Thu to off shore yacht masters practical.

In all honestly to many people think it,s a simple matter of buying a boat then off to sea with no thought of what safety equipment you need to carry and how to use it and what the rules of the road are.

Please take this post as whats its intended, it,s given to help you stay safe.

I also believe Sunderland Marina runs course,s as well.
Regards Harry.

Depends on your funds as boats arent cheap, I would imagine a boat will cost a lot more to keep with running costs, maintenance etc plus you dont have a car to tow it unless your gonna tow on your scooter :o lol suppose you could keep it in a boat yard which will be more ££, would make more sense to get a kayak but same again how would you transport it about?? use your money for driving lessons then you can go fishing where you want whenever you want ;)

Boat or Kayak

Boat or Kayak

Well Scotty i would suggest a boat rather than a kayak as its more roomy in a boat and can you navigate or will you just be going out on speck. Its like the lads says its best to be safe than sorry so have a good think about it first. Regards Jim.:D:D:D

I guess you could argue that a boat is potentially safer. It's a lot harder to fall out of compared to a kayak

Forget budget and think about the sort of fishing you want to do. Then start investigating what you need to reach your goal state.

No good asking folks what you should be getting - that's your call and your spend.

Several things to keep in mind:

1. Whatever you are thinking of doing requires that you give something else up to do it (especially if you have a little one).

2. Setup budget is very different to ongoing running costs of your chosen hobby.

3. Cost out what you think you need to spend and then add a substantial contingency fund. If you end up not having to spend it, great, but the chances are you will.

Most of my fishing is quick dash stuff, where my daughter is off somewhere with her mother or she's in bed asleep being looked after by mum. That precludes my from buying into a kayak or boat or, at the very least, it makes things a lot more challenging, since a quick dash out the door in the evening, after 8pm, severely limits my fishing where either boat or kayak are concerned, but shore marks are still on the cards.

You need to figure out the kind of fishing you want to do and go from there.

Have a think about that yourself in relation to your own circumstances.

Good luck, whatever you decide.

If it was me I'd shove the 2k into a savings account for the little 'un :)

Thanx lads and a think it going to be a kayak and the little ones a think try have a nuff in ther banks lol for wen ther 18 lol and any be deep water fishing raily and 2-3mile off show

:Dsome great advice you have had scotty, from the lads, and i know how keen you are to have a boat and go fishing:)

:(sadly scotty, buying the boat is only the start of a expensive journey:(

£2000 may seem like a fortune (and it is),but it wont get you very far in boating terms:(

theres a multitude of things to consider,i aint even going to try and start here:exclam:

if we get to sea next sunday(and its not looking good at the moment) we will have a bit craic then:)

aye that will be sound :D

If you dont care about money and have alot to spend then get a boat as its money pay out all the time, if you want something cheaper but less comfy and safer buy a Yak.

Very quick pro's and cons

Boat

Nice to have your own
Able to go when you want and fish where you wnat
Safer, better ride

Con's

Endless pit of money
Time spent cleaning servicing
at least £1000 a year to dock
Rising fuel costs

Yak

Pro's

Easy to use
Cheap once purchased
Can take anywhere in the UK

Con's

Has to be flat sea
Hard to get comfy due to space
Really should go out in more than 1

lots to think about Scotty. I'd love my own boat but too much to pay out when things go wrong. Even if you tow your boat, you got to think about slip way fees and are you able to launch it on your own. The list is endless.
You could spend the season going on different charters every week, that'll soon put a dent in your money.

i wouldn't dive in, so to speak,

it can be a very expensive hobby, i've just had the main and aux outboard serviced with new inpellers etc £320 and just got yacht club membership yearly renewals £270 ish

and that's just the "got to do's" the list goes on.....:(

but on the brighter side it's worth every penny....fish please...:D

Still cost you a fee to launch her, pay for a year ticket or a day pass at some area's..Sunderland marina does it £25 a day or something like that.

If your set on a boat start saving now, its great fun but endless costs.

Lad in the boat yard last week summed it up perfect when i was talking with him......................If you love fishing buy a boat, if you hate someone buy them a boat. :)

I love boating, live for it infact but in a year i will spend almost 2k on using the boat....turn that into charter trips and you could not fish that many trips in a year...for me its about the owning and being able to fish when i want but i would go back to charter boats from the Tyne in a heart beat if or i should say when the money runs out.

Boats really are money pits, so you would need to budget a lot in addition to the cost of the boat for all the extra gear and upkeep you need. Fuel efficiency is horrific compared with a car’s or scooter’s mpg. No one buys a boat because it makes financial sense though. :)

Used by an experienced paddler, kayaks are much safer than most of our fishing boats and are not restricted to use in flat calm seas. You would still need a lot of extra kit beyond just the kayak, budget for paddles, VHF radio, possible a fishfinder/GPS, wet or drysuit, buoyancy aid, etc. Yaks are easier than boats to transport and store too.
